Girls rock your bois

Sufjan and cheerleaders--hotSufjan Stevens - Chicago .

I know, I know, this album leaked already. Great. But, there's times of convergence and this is one of them for me. I had never been to Chicago before this winter, and after spending a day of excellent record shopping, I went back to my friend's apartment to await her coming home from work. It was while waiting there that my former live-in girlfriend of many years called to tell me she was engaged. For good or ill, Chicago is always going to be a town for that memory. Add to that my recent trip to Rome, where, when staring up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, I was able to finally get over the whole Sufjan Stevens as Christian rocker thing. Are Michaelangelo's works any less ass-kicking because they're about God? (Admit it, you're like me, when looking at ancient works of art, you're thinking about indie rock too.) Anyway the point is, if the music is good, and the lyrics aren't preachy, I'm just going to let myself like it.

These two thoughts had been rattling around my brain when Stevens' people sent us this track. I love the way that while I don't always know what Sufjan is doing, or where he's going, I always get the feeling that he does, and I'm willing to go along for the ride. This track is no exception. It's familiarly Sufjan Stevens, but it's also a little different. For me, when it's Sufjan, and it's about Chicago, and he repeats the line "I made a lot of mistakes", it's just going to keep hitting home. I can't wait for this album to come out in July.

So just in case you don't know, this track is from Sufjan Steven's second state album, Illinois. You can find out more about it and his other albums at his label, Asthmatic Kitty and at his own website

I completely agree with overlooking the Christian undertones if you're not Christian. I'm sick of people saying they're not willing to give Sufjan a try because he's a Jesus lover.

"It's familiarly Sufjan Stevens"

What a relief!

yes it has been posted elsewhere, but that was a great post. the "i made a lot of mistakes" bit is my favorite part of the song.

I dislike people who think that they are better than me because they think they have a dietous best friend.

Did you mean deitous? Which still isn't a word but would be trying to imply "god-like"? That's my point about Sufjan, he doesn't think he's better than you (although he's probably a better speller), he doesn't force his faith down your throat. I dig it.

Cool, I have a soar throught today so my spelling isn't so good. I am glad that he isn't all like fascist.

Christian or not, how could I have a problem with Sufjan's lovely work when the music of self-righteous vegans like Moby is rampant.

Just realized that this is one of the few songs Sufjan played at the PLUG awards show - but it was just him singing and playing guitar and a girl singing harmony with him... stripped down like that, it was so pretty it was nearly heartbreaking

I had a similar experience with this song - My ex-live-in girlfriend moved to Chicago for grad school and things fell apart as I tried to make the transistion from Madison, WI, to be with her - It was right after that he performed a version of this live on just a banjo for some radio station (which I, of course, made into an mp3)- it holds a lot of meaning for me, as well.

Wow. ive been having a really tuff week. a week were nothing i could do could make me smile , no amount of bright california sunshine. No amount of comfort from others around me. Nothing could penetrate this wall ive made around myself, the sinking feeling has been taking me further and further. But then suddenly after a week of not even being able to get on my computer, i do, and with your website and this paticular track i can for a moment forget about the things from which eat away at my heart and my life. Thanks again for continously introducing me to great music.

I'm glad you can see past religious differences and just enjoy the music. I myself am a christian. I don't listen to christian music, nor do I hate those who don't. I understand people have their own beliefs and I don't try to force mine on them, but if someone can't see past the artists beliefs and just enjoy the music, then something's wrong.

I dig Sufjan 'cause he isn't a self-righteous prick AND his music doesn't suck, unlike most of the "Christian" music I'm forced to listen to AS a Christian.

Hey,
You can here Sufjan talk about the christianity thing around minute 1hr 30 of this
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/spinning/episodes/02042005
about how it doesn't make people to feel like an outsider, how he feels on the outside of the institution of christianity, and how even the word Christianity makes him feel very uncomfortable, and there are good reasons for that. Faithful to your person and faith is how he puts it.
It's not exclusive.

What a relief to have a musician who understands the struggle to call oneself something that is also constantly profaned by misuse and power. Even non-Christians who dislike Christians should be greatful; he's on the "inside" of an otherwise impenetrable fortress.

Perhaps influence such as his will actually reach the ears of Christians (such as myself) in order to remind us what our faith is (and isn't) about.

First of all,
Yes that is bad, its actually horrible JuJu..
Now on to the music.
I picked up the "come on feel the illinoise" the morning I left for Illinois (i know im so cheesy)
with my buddy to take in the lovely sounds of Intonation music fest, and Lollapallooza.
The album didn't actually make us enjoy our trip more...knowledge wise, however it kept us going, and as Sufjan put it "sleeping in parking lots"
We enjoyed it so much, we stayed an extra day to catch The shout out louds, Secret Machines, and Kings Of Leon.
