Sun Washes Over Me

Anathallo - Holiday At SeaAnathallo - A Holiday At Sea.

Anathallo are one of those bands that just can't kick anybody out. Rather than have a revolving lineup of four or five guys -- a different drummer on this record, new horn player on this one -- they just cram all of them onstage at the same time, light the fuse and see what happens. At its core, this music is the same angular midwestern mathcore that we've seen for years. And I use mathcore in terms of bands like Cap'n Jazz or whatever. You know what I'm talking about.

But it's also slow and steady, building with a confident horn section, roiling toms and a sweet sense of the Epic. This isn't just a song. Frankly, I don't know what it is. I'm not entirely 100% behind this band... although I'm positive that if this came out in the mid 90s I would've shouted their name to the rafters. However, I'm really interested in what they're trying to do. It's not quite an american version of Sigur Ros, but they might be somewhat interested in that. And once the screaming kicks in at the four minute mark (yeah, it's an 8 minute song), things really start to get exciting and you can see how this gaggle of guys up on a stage could really throw together an amazing show.

Somehow it all works. The constantly shifting guitar line -- reminiscent of pre-rhythm-guitar Modest Mouse -- and the soft Canadian Brass horns come together to create an entirely unique sound. It reminds me of so many things. And while the lead singer seems to be a little too on the emo side of things for me, I definitely respect their aspirations and instrumentation.

You can pick up the band's Holiday At Sea EP directly from the band for $5.

this song reminds me of something i would have loved when i lived in lewiston. a bull moose sort of purchase... even tho i've never heard this before, i feel very nostagic for something while listening to it. i guess that's a good thing.

i really didn't like this band. it was fucking all over the place. just because someone knows how to play a horn, it doesn't mean they should. it just doesn't work. bottom line. there's now central idea to the track. its all over the fucking place. the band needs some direction.

poop.

Hey, thanks for reviewing our EP. I appreciate this site a lot. Someone directed me to the review a couple days ago, and I have been mulling over my thoughts on the content. I think I agree with the judgments made by the reviewer. Thanks to the people who commented as well. I believe that music should be an open discussion. This blog format works so well. Ski, maybe you should listen for different kinds of central ideas that run through the song's structure,... a central idea could be anything, and we worked hard to use themes, while also trying to push certain elements of each song in different directions. Of course you are entitled to dislike it and believe that it still "doesn't work, bottom line", just a thought. For all I know, what we hear in it isn't what's there. Maybe it doesn't work. But either way, thanks for even caring enough to post. It's good to hear conversation, especially that of the critical type.

As much of the commentary here seems mildly derisive, I may as well say that I loved this song. I suppose it is made up of some familiar elements, but I would argue that most "math rock" this melodic, nor is Broken Social Scene (or Radiohead, for that matter, just to throw up an example of a generally acclaimed band whose songs are often "all over the place") this thoroughly pretty most of the time. Maybe I'm a little too quick to defend a band that I've only heard one song by so far (I may just go ahead and order the EPs, although I'd be a lot happier if I heard that they had an album forthcoming), but I've played this thing four times already since finding it on this site last night.

this band makes me happy and i find their music very moving.
i love how i'm sitting here in my small japanese apartment here in tokyo, listening to this band from michigan, and feeling like i'm an airplane playing in the sky.
the internet is an amazing thing. and so is anathallo! much love.

Chad I think that the singer and the bassist were in Japan (or leaving for it) as you wrote that. Smaller world than you think.

Also, these guys have been around since 2000, before BSS was hip.

I love these guys.
