Odd Nosdam - 11th Ave Freakout Pt 2 (feat. Mike Patton)
(I know I've posted a Mike Patton collaboration before, but in all honesty I didn't know he was on this track until after I'd written nearly the entire post)
I'm beginning to think that Montreal isn't really the next musical Mecca - from here, or at least on the hip/trip-hop tip, it's Ohio. Cleveland, Cincinnati and probably any other city starting with C have produced some of my favorite acts in recent years: Five Deez, RJD2, Boom Bip, and Odd Nosdam as well, who's part of cLOUDDEAD and the Anticon crew, and has produced beats for Sole, Sage Francis, Pedestrian, and many others. as part of cLOUDDEAD, he provided a musical backbone to the groups sound, and on his second solo full-length, Burner (following his No Wig For Ohio instrumental LP), he explores uber-rich soundscapes that rasp with pounding drums, waves of atmospheric electronic melodies and a sprinkle of vocals here and there. it's music that has the same psyched-out builds as the Secret Machines, but with the patience of a seasoned instrumental producer and the sound library of an omnipotent audiophile robot. the whole LP sucks you into heavy, earthy sounds that toss you around but leave you refreshed and unharmed by the end of each track. if you've enjoyed anything on Anticon, Lex or the work of Dabrye, Four Tet, or other instrumental masters, this one is for you.
you can pre-order his Burner [here].
