Friday is here, let's Dance!
"I Remember Kamchaka (Ulysses Rework)" by Alexander Robotnick
Okay, those of you who've been reading MFR for a while now know what a sucker I am for dance music, with a particular bent towards Techno, Electro and Italo Disco. Well, I'm proud to be able to share this great remixed slice of Italo-Electro goodness, courtesey of Ulysses, head of NYC-based Scatalogics Records.
Alexander Robotnick, the recording guise of Maurizio Dami, first appeared on the radar of the international dance scene in 1983 with his hit song "Problèmes d'amour," originally released by an Italian label, but later picked up by WEA and Sire records. (Fun sidenote: original pressings, especially promos, of this song sell for around $150) Many current artists working in the electro vein consider Robotnick a true pioneer, and he has many fans among us listeners too, thus this re-release with remixes is quite exciting. This track actually preceeds his later big hit, as it, along with the other Robotnick original on the EP, "Ciucci Kola," was originally released in 1982.
This Ulysses rework extends the song out and gives it more of a bump in the synths - I like it a lot, and would probably play this out if I were doing an Italo or electro flavored set. I've been a Ulysses fan since I heard his remix of Kap10Kurt song "Die Sleeping" (released on John Selway's Memory Boy records), so I'm glad to have more of his remix work at hand. Ulysses, a native New Yorker, has been working in dance music (after growing up in the early dance scene in the city) since the early 90s, starting with a stint as a radio DJ in college in New Orleans. He then came back to New York, established a weekly open-turntable event called Scatalogics that ran for four years, and started a record label of the same name in 2002. He has released a hefty number of EPs, has remixed many other folks work, and has a handful of new releases coming out soon.
You can buy the "Ciucci Kola" EP here, or at your local indie dance music retailler - the EP has the original versions of Ciucci and Kamchaka, as well as other remixes by Todd Sines and Selway.
Rock out robotnicks!
