Ready, set...

hotness

OK Go are a power-pop quartet who are big on cheerleading (like the Go! Team, maybe?) and choreographed dance moves (awesome!) - they make music that is super-fun, and have been doing so since 1999. This is worth noting because, despite their oh-so-current sound (pop + punk + disco = cash?), they have been working on their craft for years, since before it was the in-thing.

Anywho, they have a new album, their second full-length for Capitol, called OH NO coming out August 30th - out now is a new EP/single, Do What You Want. They've got a couple of streams of tracks from it on their site, and its available to download from iTunes or purchase at your favorite local music store.

BUT the reason I wanted to post something about them today is because of this hilarious video - I'm a huge fan of dancing (those of you who know me are, or should be, aware of this) whether its idiotic-awesome choreography, or drunken dancing (that one's for you Bass), and this video is a really prime example of one (or possibly both) of those things. Here's three versions of it, so do what you will, based on your bandwidth:

100KB/Sec - 300KB/Sec - 750KB/Sec

Thanks to Catonia for the heads up on this one!

thanks so much for putting up this video. that was about a million types of fantastic. i've been reading about their dance routines on their blog but never did i picture something this amazing.
i'm really anticipating the new album now.

Whatever record had "Get Over It" on it was, apart from that track and a couple others, utter shit.

I know there's a good band lurking in there somewhere though. If only my connection would let me watch these videos.

G3K: You are talking about their debut album, which scored a stunning 2.6/10 on Pitchfork. The follow-up EP wasn't much better.

They found their ways to be cool!
the video is so hilarious!

anonymous -- concerts are usually in New York or Los Angeles, where we live.

And I agree with you folks -- this band has far more misses than it has hits. This particular song ain't bad, and the video more than makes up for what it lacks.

what song is this video for?

Nostalgialikewoah.
OK Go and I go way back. Thanks for the video link - it's priceless.

victor: Looks like something off the forthcoming album.

Their first album was somewhat of a disappointment. The songs that were brilliantly performed in the live shows seemed to lose something in translation to the studio. Plus, there was a bit of unwelcome filler (c.f. "There's a Fire" especially) left in the doughy middle of the CD that could have been replaced by much, much tighter stuff. Even so, I still listen to (and enjoy) this CD from time to time.

As for Pitchfork's stunning 2.6: fuck 'em. I still haven't forgiven them for the really crappy grade (2.8!) they gave TMBG's Mink Car.

Posted by: Smerp! at June 27, 2005 05:01 PM

Bloody hell I loved that. So cool.

Posted by: james henry at June 27, 2005 05:04 PM

Well, of course Pitchfork wouldn't give the album a good mark. It's too fun. Drowned In Sound had a good appraisal: Ok Go are the anti-Radiohead. It explains why they gave it 4 out of 5 and Pitchfork's was so low. And while we're discussing bad scores, Stylus gave it a F.

But if this song is on the forthcoming album, then it'll be one to watch.

Posted by: Peck at June 27, 2005 05:21 PM

Drowned in Sound needs to be banned from putting a grade with their reviews; too many of them are horribly inflated. Pitchfork is, at least, somewhat reliable -- if a bit predictable. Cokemachineglow tends to be good, too.

Posted by: Greg at June 27, 2005 06:53 PM

That was so awesome.

Posted by: wayne at June 27, 2005 07:05 PM

wow, didn't know so many people were disappointed with the first album. i thought it was a fun, catchy summer album. nothing spectacular, but not disagreeable.

Posted by: pinder at June 27, 2005 07:25 PM

I also love the first album. Good, solid pop.

Posted by: Robot David at June 27, 2005 08:39 PM

This is so brilliant. I can't even control myself.

Posted by: Anne Manchester at June 27, 2005 08:54 PM

yeah, I liked the first album as well
but I have to admit
that I've seen them live enough
that I think more about that
then the quality of the album
when I listen to it

that being said,
it's pop
I hate when people
dismiss something because
it is what is it
and it's not embarrassed to admit it

and people, people, people
pitchfork
is not the be all and end all
of music reviews

best video ever. all i can think about is how many times these guys said "oh i'll bring it" during the shoot.

Posted by: allie at June 28, 2005 07:49 AM

Who choreograhed the dance moves?

Posted by: joel at June 30, 2005 09:44 AM

their choreographer is named Trish. You can read about her on the guitarist's blog:

I don't know what some of you people are talking about. OK Go's first album was awesome and they remain one of my favorite bands. Their cd is great and they are incredible live. They make music that is fun, not too many artists do that anymore. Just because it isn't depressing "i feel like slitting my wrists" music doesn't mean it's not worth listening to.

Posted by: Lauren Nicole at July 1, 2005 03:27 AM

Fucking fantastic! It takes me back (embarrasingly enough) to my own pep club days--I swear they stole some of our "moves." OK Go's local to me (Chicago) and now I know I have to see them live, regardless of the fact that I've never been that intrigued by their music.

This band is pure RUBISH, as far as music goes. But where their music completely lacks anything interesting they make up in being funny and having a good time. I always look to this site for interesting music.

Posted by: MoreFire at July 13, 2005 11:46 AM

Yay! Andy gave me a dvd of this after their show in Montreal! it kicks so much ass!

Posted by: Laura at July 13, 2005 09:47 PM

I never looked at any reviews for any of their music...and I loved it. ALL of it. Maybe I just have bad taste, but there are much lauded bands who are worse than okgo..

Posted by: ferris at August 11, 2005 09:06 PM

i have had an on and off love affair with ok go for the past 2 or 3 years now. i love that there are break up songs, and all that, but they're not sad or depressing. its like, "ok, u're cheating on me, but im not gonna be sad about it." i don't have their cd, but i have heard alot of it, and i love every minute of it. ok go is different, and i think that's why people have a problem with them.

Posted by: samm at August 15, 2005 07:43 PM

I happen to LOVE Ok Go!!!!!! Their self-titled album is amazing! THe lyrics are so poetic and if people actually take to time to listen to them and understand what they are trying to say then you will fall in love with their music. Plus, all their songs have a good beat.
