You Don't Like It, Get Off My Brand New D*ck

Rhymefest Getting All Crazy With ItRhymefest - Brand New feat. Kanye West [main version]. So, for all the kids saying we don't post enough East Coast, or post too much West Coast, I decided to post some shit from Chicago. So there.

Rhymefest has been doing his thing in the underground for a few years now, running with pal Kanye from the beginning. He got a shot to stardom with all the controversy surrounding "Jesus Walks" last year, but I first heard him on the Mark Ronson Vocal Mix of Air's "Alpha Beta Gaga" from last summer. I like his style. He seems to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Now, I'm not the hip-hop guy around here, so I'm not going to claim to be an expert or anything. I just know what I like. When it comes to hip hop, I sorta cherry pick my favorites, not latching on to one group or emcee for the whole ride. So when this slid across my desk this morning, and it got my head nodding, I decided to post it up. I think Kanye can be hit or miss (although I love that Golddigger single), but he seems to hold it down just fine here. The beat isn't crazy on fire or anything, but it's nice enough and I like driving to it. I think the synth blast could hit a little harder, but otherwise it's pretty tight. I love all the word play with the "brand news" as well. I think Rhymefest has an interesting thing going on, falling sort of in the "thinking mans" camp of emcees, but having a good sense of humor and a solid grasp of his own strengths.

This track comes off his forth-coming album. I'm not sure of all the details, and his site has yet to be updated. Someone wanna fill me in with the particulars?

[update]:. Turns out that Rhymefest hails from Indianapolis, which is awesome. They need something more than just racecars to put them on the map. I'm also told that the album is going to be out on the 20th of September. Even better.

The real question... does anyone like the song?

Rhymefest is from Indianapolis--currently representing 100% of our hip-hop scene. It'd be good to see that mentioned, too!

Rhymefest's album is called "Blue Collar Poppin" and is due out September 20. An interview with him can be found here:

I second the proposed Indianapolis mention - he's based here, after all.

This track is (like everything Kanye touches) dope. Kanye made John Legends record. He "makes" everything he touches. Off course working with the likes of Talib, Mos, Jadakiss, Common do make easy work. We are dying for the new Kanye Record, which as we understand it, has some production from Jon Brion- unbelieveable the current master of pop with the current master of hip hop. That's enough from me- thanks for the track.
