Why Do I Have to Wake Up Anyway?

Mike Doughty - Haughty MelodicMike Doughty - White Lexus.

Now, I know that Mr. Doughty is quite internet savvy, so I'm not sure how long this is going to last. All I know is that I like this song for many reasons.

1. It's the song on the new record that reminds me most of Skittish, what with the strummed acoustic guitar melody that almost sounds like "No Peace, Los Angeles."

2. It isn't overloaded with instrumentation, allowing it to breathe a bit. Some of the songs off the new record are a little crowded for me. I'm so used to his stripped-down acoustic records -- which themselves took a second to get used to after the thick production of the Soul Coughing records.

3. It's a quick 2:21, not over-staying its welcome and still catchy enough to stick in your head all afternoon. I love songs like that.

4. I like his voice a lot. It's really that simple.

This is the other CD on ATO that I was talking about the other day, proving itself to be a decent little label. This new record is good. It took a few spins for me to get into it, but knowing how much I've liked his other records I stuck with it and found plenty of rewarding material. I like how his style is rooted more in hip hop than in indie music, with the repetitive structures and focus on lyrical gymnastics rather than guitar jangle and slack. It's a fine album.

You can purchase a copy of his new CD, Haughty Melodic, directly from his online store.

doughty can do no wrong in my book mostly because i feel el oso was one of the finest of the 90's.

amen - El Oso and Soul Coughing in general were as good as it got for me in the 90's. I bought El Oso at the Virgin Megastore in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, and soon after discovered that if you listen to "Blame" during a rush hour commute, all of the thousands of heads of the Japanese commuters seem to bump along to the beat as they dash from train to train.
