this one's worth hearing out

Soulwax - NY Excuse (Nite Remix)
Soulwax. They're Belgian. They're brothers. Their discograpy is a bit tough to follow. Some of you may know them as 2 Many DJ's, which hit huge during the whole frothing mash-up genesis pit around 2000 or so, releasing at least five (I'm not sure) monsterous mash-up mix CDs that rivaled even the Avalanche's Gimix in quality (all of them - not an easy feat). But they're also a band, and busy-as-hell remixers as well. They've done some incredible remixes (usually with a mash-up twist) of Ladytron, DJ Shadow's Six Days (a great B-52's masher), Daft Punk, LCD Sound System, and other top-shelf acts. They also put out music as a band (the brothers are the core unit in all of these various iterations), and to no one's surprise, it's great.
Morex posted the DFA remix of this track a few months ago, but this version (the "Nite" version) of their album track NY Excuse is so damn good it makes me wonder why this wasn't the album cut to begin with. The original comes from their second full-length, Any Minute Now [buy it on iTunes], which is a punque-electro-dance heaping mess-o-fun. That said, you won't find this version, or the DFA version, or the awesome Funky Town mash-up version (called NY Lipps) of the track on the LP - those are all on the 12" single [buy it from the Turntable Lab]. James Murphy of the DFA had a serious hand re-writing the track for the single versions, along with the Dewaele brothers and vocalist Nancy Whang.
If only iTunes got their hands on those mix CDs - those things were around $23 each! But in the meantime, Soulwax: carved out of solid platinum and dusted with powdered sugar. Anytime you see "remixed by Soulwax" on a jacket, the single is probably worth buying.
