this one's worth hearing out

Soulwax - NY Excuse (Nite Remix)

Soulwax. They're Belgian. They're brothers. Their discograpy is a bit tough to follow. Some of you may know them as 2 Many DJ's, which hit huge during the whole frothing mash-up genesis pit around 2000 or so, releasing at least five (I'm not sure) monsterous mash-up mix CDs that rivaled even the Avalanche's Gimix in quality (all of them - not an easy feat). But they're also a band, and busy-as-hell remixers as well. They've done some incredible remixes (usually with a mash-up twist) of Ladytron, DJ Shadow's Six Days (a great B-52's masher), Daft Punk, LCD Sound System, and other top-shelf acts. They also put out music as a band (the brothers are the core unit in all of these various iterations), and to no one's surprise, it's great.

Morex posted the DFA remix of this track a few months ago, but this version (the "Nite" version) of their album track NY Excuse is so damn good it makes me wonder why this wasn't the album cut to begin with. The original comes from their second full-length, Any Minute Now [buy it on iTunes], which is a punque-electro-dance heaping mess-o-fun. That said, you won't find this version, or the DFA version, or the awesome Funky Town mash-up version (called NY Lipps) of the track on the LP - those are all on the 12" single [buy it from the Turntable Lab]. James Murphy of the DFA had a serious hand re-writing the track for the single versions, along with the Dewaele brothers and vocalist Nancy Whang.

If only iTunes got their hands on those mix CDs - those things were around $23 each! But in the meantime, Soulwax: carved out of solid platinum and dusted with powdered sugar. Anytime you see "remixed by Soulwax" on a jacket, the single is probably worth buying.

I'd also add that Soulwax will soon be releasing a compilation LP called Nite Versions. It'll be on the streets September 26, but I hear you'll be able to purchase downloads of it on Sept 19. The record will feature a set of the "Nite Version" tracks and remixes that they've created over the years--including this "NY Excuse" Nite Version.

They're going tour throughout the UK to support the new album in early Sept., starting with a show in London's Fabric nightclub September 9 (Special guest: Vitalic!).

The Soulwax remix of Gorillaz "Dare" is f*n awesome! I had no idea that Soulwax = 2 Many DJs. I think 2MDs are up to vol. 10 in their mix cd series, plus another 5 or 6 "radio" sessions.

Actually, the only "As Heard on Radio Soulwax" they ever really properly released was vol. 2. Beyond that, the band claims that all the others are people's bootlegs of radio sets they've done.

from the 2 many djs website:
"For the record: There’s only one official 2 Many DJ’s album. Shrewd moneymakers have released a ridiculous amount of other volumes, and are selling them in shops and on the internet. These are not official 2 Many DJ’s albums! Most of these bootlegs contain one hour mixes made for a radioshow called ‘Hang The DJ’, which was broadcast on the Belgian radio station Studio Brussel. They were never intended for release, nor were they cleared with any of the artists. Some of these mixes are quite old (up to 4 years), and there are even copies out there which aren’t mixed by 2 Many DJ’s at all, so beware of imitations. Please don’t spend your money on these cheeky CD’s. There are places on the internet where you can download them for free, so we hear..."

Course, they could be leaking them to the internet as well...

Cool song. It really grooves through your head but I have to say it wears on a little too long for my liking... Thanks though. Cheers.
