Holy What Now?
Bontempi Rock Correction: Casio Bossa Nova by Holy Fuck (website and track name Updated!)
Yes, I would be embarassed to say this band's name to my mother, and you should be too, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying HF's ridiculously good music. Think LCD Soundsystem without Murph's ironic lyrics - seriously, its basically what I imagine (and honestly really hope) LCD sounds like when they play live. This is what this kind of crazy electronic punky dance music should sound like if it were being played live.
And I do mean LIVE live: no sequencers, no samplers, no laptops. This amazing soundclash is all made with live drums, live bass, toy keyboards and other gadgets, looping pedals and crazy old FX units, AND, the piéce de résistance, a 35mm film synchronizer thingy that band leader Brian Borcherdt (sounds like Orchard) scratches with... no, seriously, its like he's scratching old film-strips and movies that have a magnetic sound track on them, and it sounds like a turntable.
See I had the good fortune of seeing these crazy crazy guys perform live a few weeks back at the Mercury Lounge in NYC, opening up for (and then playing as backing band with) Beans, and it was off the fucking hook. Seriously, totally bananas. Their songs made me want to run around in circles and fall down, or jump up and down and rock-kick my feet out in all directions. It was insanity in a nutshell.
For those of you in the know, Borcherdt is a bit of a Canadian wunderkind, playing guitar in By Divine Right, writing songs for Hot Carl and co-managing the Dependent Records label based out of both Halifax and Toronto. The rest of the band is made up of rotating members that lately have included Glenn Milchem, Kevin Lynn, Loel Campbell, and Graham Walsh, are all in other bands too. HF is really a showpiece for this great amalgam of performers, and because the songs are all done live with a good amount of improvisation, the recorded output, though damn good, doesn't necessarily capture the whole picture.
This track comes off of their new CD, which at the time I got it was simply a pair of different recording sessions, "Stars & Suns" and "Idea of East" - I don't have release-date info yet, but if I find out I'll keep y'all informed.
Holy Fuck dates in NYC and Toronto:

Keep your eyes on these guys, I think they'll be an interesting band to keep track of.
