Get Creative

UPDATED
Who loves you baby? I do, that's who.

I've got two tickets to go see Nouvelle Vague this Wednesday, September 14th Canal Room (285 West Broadway, at Canal Street) at 11:00pm.

If you haven't heard them already, their trick is smooth-lounge takes on classic 80s songs - you can hear some of their covers on their website, and some more on their MySpace page - especially notable are their covers of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Too Drunk To Fuck" - hilarious and very entertaining.

So, who's gonna get these tix? Well, lately I've been doing a lot of Karaoke with my friends (shouts out to my Tucson crew at the Mint, and the Trash Bar crew!), so why don't you tell me your favorite song to sing at karaoke, and your preferred style to sing it in (the more elaborate the description, the better).

Best response (in the comments) wins the tickets, so do it quickly! I'll pick the winner on Wednesday.

OK, that's that - I'm a sucker for star-crossed lovers and whatnot, AND singing Madonna songs is super-awesome, SO Kumar, your girl Judith (plus-1) is going to the show on Music For Robots! I bet you can belt out that
"Keep on pushing me baby
Don't you know you drive me crazy
You just keep on pushing my love over the borderline"
Yeah. Kumar or Judith, send me an email - mr dot blair at gmail dot com - do it today!

Judith is unable to attend, so runner up, Larry (Cash) and his girl (Carter) will be going instead!

i'm not trying for the tickets (obviously), but here's what i think is my favorite song for karaoke with a group of friends: Why Can't We Be Friends, by War. it's got the longest chorus which, sober or not, you just can't fuck up.

Shakin' by Eddie Money

In the style of John Ashcroft singing "Let the Eagle Soar."

Filthy/ Gorgeous by the Scissor Sisters. Because sometimes I want to be a "an acid junkie college flunky dirty puppy daddy bastard" too. Oh and don't forget a "classy honey kissy huggy lovey dovey ghetto princess" as well.

Sung in the style of an impoverished transvestite, just looking for a lucky break.

OK, I'm going to be honest. I was never a kareoke fan (jeez, I can't even spell it) but if I had to, it would be Borderline by Madonna because you know that song would be on the dial and it rocks.

I could really really use those tickets to give to my girlfriend. I live in Chicago and she just moved to Brooklyn. Oh, the agony. We have been together 4 years and she reluctantly moved there for grad school for painting, which I encouraged since she was stuck in a deadend job and was never finding time to paint. I however am in the best job I've ever had and basically can't move out there otherwise I would. She is poor. Her apartment is one of those New York dreams, complete with bars and broken glass (hey it has character though). We spend all our money on desperate air fare and cheap champagne. One thing she said to me, is she wants to see more music while in New York. In fact, she's made a point of it. She would just love this show; I've already sent her mp3s to get her hyped. But I fear she may not go for the money. Consider our case not out of pity, but out of sheer understanding of a love split by art and tumultuous times. Her name is Judith, and her email is "mail dot jud at gmail dot com." Okay fine: Keep on pushing me, keep on pushing my love ... over the borderline (synth: dun dun-dun).

Okay, this is weird that THIS is the answer that comes to mind, but it just rolls off my tongue: "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode dressed like Johnny Cash with my girlfriend flailing about behind me dressed like June Carter.

i like "three marlenas" or "one headlight" by the wallflowers,
sung like jakob dylan's father, Bob.

"one... two, three... mar-lay-nuhs."
