My love weighs a ton

portastictastic!Full disclosure: I get a lot of musical inspiration, including for this here blog, from Salon.com's Audiofile column. Written by Thomas Bartlett, who is in the excellent band Doveman, Audiofile is a column that features not only insightful writing but a daily download, usually from an artist's or label's site.

This is how I recently discovered Portastatic, a band featuring Superchunk's Mac McCaughn. As Conor "Bright Eyes" Oberst writes in his press bio for the band, "[The band's new record] expands on themes of disillusionment, frustration with the world, love of friends and family, the battle between regret and hope, and the blurry stream of events that connect the past to the present and bring an increasingly terrifying future into focus." Sounds fun, right?

Well, it is, if this track is any indication:

Portastatic - I Wanna Know Girls

It's just a solid, solid pop song, and I really like it. Bartlett calls it the "indie summer song of the year", and I'm having a hard time coming up with a better candidate; the jangle is contagious and the singing is sincere and heart-melting. I personally haven't heard the whole record, Bright Ideas, but I have no reason to believe it isn't super awesome.

Why not find out for yourself? You can order Bright Ideas from all sortsa places, like Merge Records and iTunes.

Thomas Bartlett has his own music column TOO? He gets more awesome every day...

Is Portastic really singing "love is like an Uzi" or is it my imagination?

Ok, the cover image says Portastatic and their website is at www.portastatic.com.. Portastic also sounds good though.

The rest of the album is great too, Through with People and White Wave especially....

Don't be thrown by the lead-off title song, which is a bit of a drag comparatively...

Sounds like Mac has been going to the Kinks school of songwriting. He's still got that guitar sound that I love, but I just haven't been into the Portastatic stuff since he took it to a full band.

This song is pretty catchy though. Maybe I'll try to disassociate myself from my expectations and give it a run.

Oh, and yes "my love is like an Uzi/it weighs a ton". Pretty bad analogy, if you ask me.

I'm a long time Portastatic fan (Mac's side project has been going since the early '90s), but this is probably his most "rocking" or pop-like album, much closer to Superchunk than most of his earlier efforts (2002's "Summer of the Shark" went in a similar direction).

Standout tracks include "Center of the World", "White Waves" and "Through with People". I reviewed the CD (along with Death Cab's latest) at this link...

"my uzi weighs a ton" is a public enemy song.

This is very GOOD idea IMHO :)
