Nobody Can Tell Ya There's Only One Song

Make Y our Own Kind of MusicMama Cass Elliot - Make Your Own Kind of Music.

Holy mother of music supervision. I'm not sure who the brainiac was that decided to use this during that amazing opening sequence of Lost last night, but it worked out perfectly. Somehow, someone over there at ABC cracked into my head and decided to show me everything I wanted to see -- I mean, how else could they have decided to go with a sweet-ass 70s set with huge computers running on magnetic tape, leatherette benches and wood paneling? Terminals with green monitors? Check. Geodesic Domes (like those in Sci-Fi hippie classic silent running)? You betcha. It was awesome.

As for the song -- it's late 60s pop perfection. Uptempo, rousing chorus, great beat. It's a perfect song for the morning. It wastes little time getting to the explosion of the chorus, which makes up the meat of the song. It's beautiful. I wish more songs were like this.

We can also use this as an entry point to talk about the frugal use of music on a show like this. There have been very few actual songs used on Lost -- off the top of my head all I remember is Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" used in the finale, but I'm sure there were others. But when the show has a score and not a soundtrack, a song like this is jarring and stands out in a truly wonderful way. No one watching that first three minutes last night knew what was going on -- it could've been a flashback, a flash foward, a dream sequence, or even a commercial for something else entirely. It wasn't until the explosion when the record stops that we're pulled into the weird reality of what's actually going on.

Anyway, I don't want to go all fan boy on you -- but you should go check out Flight 815. It's run by robot friend Lemon Red, and kevin bacon relation Jon Caramanica, who wrote a piece about the robots in SPIN magazine about a year ago. Anyway, go get your conspiracy on.

Great bubblegum pop song. Who wrote it? Sounds like The Partridge Family or the Cowsill could've done it just as well?? I swear I've heard Paul Westerberg cover this in one of his shows in recent years....

Posted by: Dfactor at September 22, 2005 5:14 PM

Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote it. They wrote hits for the Drifters (on Broadway, saturday night at the movies), The animals (we gotta get outta this place), The righteous brothers (you've lost that lovin' feeling, you're my soul and inspiration), and Somewhere Out There from the American Tail soundtrack -- among others.

Yes, Paul Westerberg did a cover of this in 1996--it was released as a flexidisc (remember them?) with Bob magazine. Bravo to the producers for the opening of last night's episode. Lost and Arrested Developement make my cable worthwhile.

The first thing that popped into my head during the episode was, "Well, I'll no longer associate this song with the movie _Beautiful Thing_" -- which was sort of bittersweet for me. Couldn't they have used "Welcome To The World," which would be just as brilliantly ironic?

What other Lost-themed songs are there?
Hurley's Having Dreams - Belle and Sebastian
Numbers with Wings - The Bongos

Any other suggestions?

What about Icicle Works' Whisper to a Scream?

Lush's Hey Hey Helen (in reference to Locke's mysterious love)

I saw a blog on webnymph this morning that had a whole thing written up about Lost-inspired mix CD. Does anyone have the URL as I can't find it now. Some of the above songs were mentioned.

Oh, also, Styrofoam's "Couches in Alleys" for its "hey, Jack, it's me" refrain.

dammit, mama cass, you should have lived longer. GREAT post, what a surprise.

such a great song! I was a teenager in the sixties, I should have listened harder to those lyrics. Must go out for a Mommas and Pappas cd tonight!

and speaking of great songs on TV, did anyone hear that version of Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" on the OC? It was a good (but rather toothless) version by Matt Pond PA.

Thanks so much for posting this about Lost. I'm addicted to the show. I, too, haven't been able to get it out my head since Wednesday, and needed to hear it. It's a wonderful song. Thanks again. Viva la LOST.

I suspect part of the reason for a spare use of pop songs on LOST is that rights holders have been charging excessive fees for putting them on the DVD season box sets. TV Producers are aware of this now in the production phase, and they are just choosing to use fewer pop songs.

Some DVD TV show box sets have been raised in price to cover the extra cost of the music rights (American Dreams, SCTV), and some shows have simply taken the songs out and replaced them on DVD with music they could hire for less money (Roswell).

If LOST uses mostly original music, it will likely keep the cost of the DVD sets down. Not that I'm buying them, but for those who do, it will help.

I'm really glad you posted this. I recognized the tune, but didn't remember who the artist was.

Did anyone find that blog with the LOST Mix CD thing??

Posted by: Dragun_fuzz at September 24, 2005 4:14 AM

is that fuzz bass on the left channel or is it just really overdriven acoustic guitar?

I will not be ignored.

I've gotta say, i think that the decision to not use pop songs on Lost is entirely for the jarrling feel that you get when one shows up. Most of the first season's pop songs were used at the end of scenes while Hurley would sit and listen to his discman. Which was especially awesome during the episode where his batteries died right in the middle of some Damien Rice song. Anyway, yeah. That was an amazing season opener, and a pretty great song I'd never heard. High fives all around.

THANK YOU!! I have been searching the net for the name/artist of this song!! Never heard it before LOST.. Going over to ITunes to buy it! Thanks!

Why would you buy it on iTunes if it's posted here for free? :(

People were talking about cool songs that are played on LOST, on DISC 5, first episode, there is a scene where Hurley puts on his headphones and treats us to some real music, Sun finally bares her skin to the world, Charley and Claire are hanging out and every thing just seems hunky dory....then his batteries run out...WHAT IS THE SONG THAT IS BEING PLAYED? I can't find it...I thought it might be Hurleys having dreams by B&S as someone above mentioned, however, B&S don't even have a song like that in their discography...any help on this would be great...

I'm pretty sure he's listening to Damien Rice, and chances are it's either "Delicate" or "The Blower's Daughter." I forget which one.

Hi guys!
HUGE Lost fan (from Scotland)
I'm (fairly) sure that 'Dayvan Cowboy' from the new album 'The Campfire Headphase' by (Scottish!) band Boards of Canada is used somewhere on Season 1.
I might be wrong - but I hope I'm not!
;O)
