'nother Contest

fun

OK guys, once again, I've got a contest for you all, and this time the winner gets a pair of tickets to see Brendan Benson (with the Greenhornes and Tralala) THIS FRIDAY, September 30th, at Irving Plaza.

Here's a sample of Mr. Benson's sound:

The Pledge

I'm gonna forgo any kind of comparison of this song (which you heard a while back when I posted about it) to any other kind of song, genre, etc. because last time around I started a whole thread about what is and is not "goth" - so forget it.

Anyway, I know you are into Brendan Benson and his lush, huge-sounding rock style - this song is off of his latest album The Alternative To Love, a title I dig on - and since ideally I'd like a couple to take this pair of tickets and use it for "date" material, with robot Mark's help, we came up with this simple but elegant idea for the contest:

What's the best thing to do on a date, that's an alternative to the regular old dinner and movie type of thing?

Leave your entries in the comments BY THURSDAY MORNING as I will be contacting the winner before NOON on the 29th (and PLEASE leave your email so I can get in touch with you easily).

We have a winner!

Although Belgrade is super-sexy this time of year, and scavenger hunting is a great lead-in to getting booty, I think the best entry is:

Craig's rock-paper-scissors-date!
Solid idea! Romantic in its spontaneousness, and it is funny, which is always a good way to please the ladies! Plus, the more creative (and potentially dirty) your two options get, the better.

You're a winner Craig!

Make up a scavenger hunt around town for your date, and accompany him/her on it. That way, you can 1) show off your creativity and sense of humor, 2) trade occasional hints for promises of sexual favors, and 3) assess your date's intelligence, if you're one of those folks who wishes they could make everyone fill out a questionnaire before establishing mutual attraction.

Or, if you are trapped in Lewiston, there is always Applebee's.

i'm sorry, i know people love this guy for some reason, but i caught him at the siren festival and it was just terrible. his big fancy sound is boring, and he has some of the worst lyrics that i've ever heard.

first date....the rock paper scissor date. here's how it works. you pick your date up and since you can't decide a quality first date you let the hands make the decision making. example you say, "rock paper scissor, if i win we get drinks, you win we do coffee", and you can continue when you get tired of one place game on... "rock paper scissor, if i win we take a stroll in the park, you win we catch a movie", and of course do remember the crucial, "rock paper scissor, if i win you pay, if you win i pay". in summary "if the date is bland blame the hand"

Anything with eastern European flavor. Ideally, a trip to Belgrade.

Craig, your rock-paper-scissors-date is a damn good idea, it is romantic in its spontaneousness, and it is funny too!

For a great first date with someone you really wanna try and be with there is no better date then a day in the city on a weekend. First thing is first you must go catch a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. Its beyond belief what that feeling is like in there and since there is alotof downtime in baseball it gives you time to talk but there is also enough exciment and things happening to give you something else to talk about in case conversation is lacking due to being shy at first. After the game its off on the D train to Resturant Road and a nice dinner at the Jazz Bar Swing!. After this dinner which is a cheap yet awesome meal you have two choices. Stay and check out many of the great Swing or Bebop Bands they have there or go and check out a cheap Broadway play. My suggestion would be Phantom because its still cheap to get into and probalby the best play running right now. After all that it should be a lock for a memorable first date.
