every now and again life gets to the point where you have to pay attention to everything that makes sense too much. your days fill up with things to check off, stress over, finalize or mail. and it's all important, apparently. these days are long, hard, and make music like this track (and the others) from the first full-length release by WHY? (a.k.a. Yoni Wolf, from cLOUDDEAD and Hymie's Basement with Fog's Andrew Broder) essential in a clutch. simple, jangly, folk-y pop that brings back the smiles I last wore when listening to old Folk Implosion LPs for the first time. Yoni's lyrics tell enough of a story without getting too involved, and still have the requisite Anticon ring of slight nonsense. personally, I love it; keep things light, uncomplicated. it's as fresh as the blurb-blah-bleah that Beck gave us on Mellowgold was to me way back in the 90's.
I love the way this song takes its time to bring itself up to full bore, with the vocals and the instruments in a neck and neck race the whole way for who can be louder. and it just builds and builds and builds - it's one of those tracks you listen to three times before letting the rest of the album play through.
you can download WHY?'s new LP, Elephant Eyelash on [iTunes], or buy the CD when it comes out on October 4th.
