Golden Age Beats

dope
Real Tragic by Eliot Lipp

I don't know how I managed to let this slip through my grubby fingers, but before getting ahold of this new record, I'd never heard of Eliot Lipp. What a great name he's got...

Anyway, he's this ridiculously good producer, who makes these intense instrumental hip-hop jams - this song is a great example of how he works layers of samples, dope-ass beats, and crazy busted-sounding keys together into a tasty soup of head-bobbing sound - its a long track and goes through a lot of change, so give it the time to unfold, and it will reward you.

Lipp released an album late last year on Scott Herren's Eastern Developments label - he recorded it in a Chicago apartment with a slightly busted keyboard and sampler, but the music sounds really sophisticated despite his limitations. Lipp is nothing if not busy, AND prolific: he has an EP out now on Chicago's Hefty Records, another EP expected around the end of the year, AND a full-length, to be titled Tacoma Mockingbird (a nod to his Washington-state home-town) in early 2006.

Buy Immediate Action Vol. 10 from the Hefty Records online store, but you'd best get on it soon, because, like all of the IA series, it is a limited edition, and there's only a thousand of copies made for the whole world. The other tracks on the EP highlight some of his other talents, one of which has some crazy keyboard stuff on it, just aweosme, totally freaked out electro synth stuff on top of the dope beats. Solid.

PS Don't forget to come out to the Delancey for the 'Sup 15 release party tonight - it will be Crazy!
