Never going back and forth, I'm only going back
Buzz for The Like has largely followed these lines: "The Like are teenagers, and the offspring of famous music industry insiders, but they're also a good band." These familial connections - bassist Charlotte Froom is producer Mitchell Froom's daughter, drummer Tennessee Thomas is the daughter of Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, and singer Z Berg's father is A&R man Tony Berg - and the fact that they're on Geffen Records lead one to believe they don't need the help of Music (For Robots).
Fair enough.
I really do just like The Like, and their major label debut Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? is a well-produced, well-written, well-performed record. My favorite track is probably "Bridge To Nowhere", but this is the track Geffen has released, and so it goes:
The Like - What I Say And What I Mean.
The producer of Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? is Wendy Melvoin, onetime member of Prince's backing band The Revolution, and she does a great job here. The record sounds like it exists in some space between a cave and a living room, and lends it an ethereal quality.
The Like are getting pretty big, and again, they don't really need our help. But what can I say? I like what I like. And I like The Like.
But you knew that was coming, didn't you?
