It was good enough for Billy Burroughs
There's something about Jolie Holland that just sounds timeless to me. Well, I guess it's not something but everything - her jazz age vocals, her lyrics steeped in Public Domain mythology. She helped form the country group The Be Good Tanyas, which adds dust bowl country to the genre confusion.
Her label, Anti - also home to Tom Waits, who helped spread the word about her talents - has posted a few tracks from her second record, Escondida, which was released last year. Among them:
Jolie Holland - Old Fashion Morphine.
There's a darkness here that I love, and the horns seal the whole deal for me. Escondida as a whole is definitely worth picking up, and you can do so from Amazon or Insound.
