Make Believe - Say What You Mean
When I first put this into my CD player I knew it sounded familiar. I knew this just wasn't another band raised on midwestern emo-- it sounded too grounded, too real. There's no info in the liner notes, so song-writing credits or anything to go by-- just song titles. But lucky for me, there's an extensive bio on their site, which reveals that this band is fronted by Tim Kinsella, and is basically a new incarnation of Joan of Arc. Got it. It all makes sense now -- the interwoven guitar lines, the instrumental passages, the Sunny Day Real Estate-like vocal yelps. It's all there.
Now, full disclosure, I fucking hate Joan of Arc. Among the midwestern emo bands on Jade Tree, they were easily my least favorite. Which is weird, since I loved the Promise Ring, and had some affection for Cap'n Jazz. Anyway, I like Make Believe. I think they're good. I'm excited to see them on Saturday when they play with the Mae Shi at the Echo. It should be good.
Their album came out this month, and it's definitely worth looking into, if you like this sort of music. Perhaps it would've been better served as an EP, but it's definitely got promise.
Anyway, you should go check it out at insound .

In other Mae Shi news, they got their merch stolen, and they're leaving on tour this weekend. So that's a huge bummer. You should all go check out their Shows, and pick up a t-shirt. They should have copies the Potential split EP for sale, as well as some other stuff. They're an amazing live band, and their record Heartbeeps will easily be in my top 5 albums of the year. So I highly recommend helping this band out. I'll be there at the Echo in Los Angeles on Saturday, and anyone in the area should come out too.
