Doctor, I think I broke my Crunk

busted
Stacs of Stamina - Mourning Morning

Every now and then something really bizarre comes across my desk that I end up liking, and this crazy post-hip-hop group Stacs of Stamina is one of them. SoS is into some seriously weirdo electro-based crunked up stuff - MCs Johan, Marcus and Gesan providing bizarre flow over heady, 8-bit electronic beats and vicious synths, and in the case of this track some more strange elements like some kind of (real or synth?) flute... weird, seriously weird.

Many of the tracks have a feel similar to grime in their super-minimal beats and deep busted-up bass sounds, and one track, called "Roll" features grime MC Earz. Other tracks feature appearances by One-Two, Mike Ladd, Kehinde and the French group TTC providing the rhymes. I decided to go with an instrumental track because although the rhymes are pretty solid, I think the production-end of SoS is more interesting, and shows their abilities better, when its sans vocals. Oh, did I mention that SoS is from Sweden? Once again proving that Europe's northernmost extremity knows where the hell things are at, musically speaking anyway. There are another couple of dope instrumental-only cuts, and I also definitely recommend the vocal tracks "Stay Beautiful", "2 Damn Sexy" and the aforementioned "Roll."

Their new album, Tivoli (which I've learned is Swedish for Carnival) is out soon on on Werk Discs (who I believe is London-based) - supposedly you can purchase the disc from their compatriots at North South Divide, but I couldn't find the CD there... so I'll point you to Boomkat for those of you in Europa. US-readers, you can purchase Tivoli from our friends at Forced Exposure. They've also got an EP from earlier this year that looks like its worth checking out.

Keep it crunky.

PS: Oh, also, Kool DJ Tron and Johan have been working on ill mixes as Radio Clit that have been getting them some attention (see their press section, and one of their mixes posted as part of the Lemon Red mix series) - the mixes are pretty sick, bleepy and twisted, so check them out if you're feeling this stuff.
