Tapes 'n TapesTapes 'n Tapes - Insistor.

The world of the mp3 blog is deeply rooted in hyperbole. This is our chance, as music fans, to shout our favorite new bands to the rafters with little regard to history or the future. Tomorrow I might find the most amazing band in the world, although chances are I already heard the most amazing band in the world two weeks ago and I most definitely saw the most amazing band in the world perform live two months ago when they opened up for that other most amazing band in the world. So today, we need to turn our joyous ears towards the frosty streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota to hear the current most amazing band in the world.

Tapes 'n Tapes are a three piece. The 'n (bass player) has been replaced in the past, but the core of the band has remained the lead singer and drummer. They've been doing their noisy, unshaven thing in MNPLS for a few years now. Maybe they're even the city's best kept secret, or, maybe people there hate the band and are going to throw rocks at me for falling prey to their hype. But I don't care, because there is no hype -- just amazing, amazing songs. Listen to this damn thing. Just listen to it. I listened to it at least a dozen times yesterday. It's a great rock song. Don't let the surf plucks at the beginning fool you -- this song isn't going to stay in once place for long.

The chorus is magnificant. It just lifts me right up. The guitar is so thin, and kind of out of tune -- but it works!. This was clearly home-recorded in probably one take. And that's fine. I love it. It's a thing of beauty, and one of the catchiest singles I've heard this year. It very quickly has shot to the top of my ranks this year, and that's what this thing is all about. Everything is where it should be, and this reminds me of that. Words can't describe, ya know?

Anyway, you should all travel over to the official site to purchase the new record, Loons, from which this song comes. It's only $10, and comes very highly recommended. If I were pitchfork this would be my best new music.

You guys run the worst kind of music wed site! You are the biggest bunch of hacks that I have even seen. You are corporate cowards! You call this music underground and challenging?!! It is a joke! Listen to it! It is the same old garbage.

Posted by: Ray Collines at November 3, 2005 8:30 AM

Where is this music described as underground or challenging? This is a post about being moved by music, not starting the revolution. Go start your own flippin' music blog, troll.

Posted by: at November 3, 2005 10:47 AM

Our friend Ray posted the same comment word for word on one of our most-spammed posts, so perhaps he is a bot. I hope so, because otherwise that would only leave enormous douchbag as the only option. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, but baseless flaming without any individual movement to remedy the situation gets no points.

Ergo, Ray, if you are a person, stop whining and start your own music blog to show us where the new hotness really is at. Because now I'm curious.

Great post on Tapes 'n Tapes! You can check out a review and pictures of their CD Release Party in Minneapolis 10/28/05 here:

sucha good track. damnnnnn

I second what Ray has written! The music that is posted and written about on your precious web page tells the public just exactly who you guys really are. A bunch of chicken s*** little weasels who pretend that money is no object. You guys want to be perpetually youthful, live in utter fear of the unknown, and have lost any spark of pioneering spirit. Again, to quote Ray “ just a bunch of corporate cowards!” Open your ears. There is much more music out there then "gap punk."

Posted by: Mark Speller at November 3, 2005 3:22 PM

ah, right. that's it, now I remembered why we started this site: we ARE chickenshit little weasels who light cigars with 50$ bills, cower in our hi-rise apartments fearing the unkown, and dress head to toe in Gap and listen to CD compilations we recieve in the mail from Enron. damn man, you sure got our number.

for the record, "Ray" and "Mark" both commented from the same AOL IP addresses. I'm willing to bet the 50$ bill I'm about to light this cigar with (before I put on my Gap-punk nightie and cower under the covers) that whoever is our mystery #1 fan is....

...a douchebag. good old callow, baseless hatred - never a dull moment in the comments here on corporate, money-is-no-object (what?) MFR.

Posted by: jp at November 3, 2005 7:31 PM

It's obviously not a bot, since they tend to advertise something...and usually aren't so incredibly obnoxious and stupid.

Anyway, very good song. MFR consistently has really good stuff, and I understand the hyperbole completely -- I started my site a few months ago, and since then I've found my new favourite band about 20 times (including Holy Fuck, which I found through you and who I'm doing a feature/giveaway on this week).

Posted by: matthew at November 3, 2005 7:40 PM

i knew it! i've had my suspicions for some time now: MFR dudes are like those winged monkees in the Wizard of Oz, only they wear suits and probably eat infants and puppies instead of assorted fruits and nuts. Oh, why didn't i figure it out before?! It's so obvious. Why else would they spend all this time writing about and posting music they like for no money? Clearly it's all part of a venal plan to become the next Exronbucks.

thank you for tapes 'n tapes. this song is a day-maker.

So, I just listened to this cd at my college radio station today before I even saw you guys had a song up. I don't like the CD. And I won't be playing it on my radio show. That's all. Didn't like what I heard and plus there was more wonderful stuff to play... like The Maybellines, Kelley Stoltz, Silver Jews, Rogue Wave, Tremolo, etc. They just didnt' make my cut this week.

Posted by: Taryn at November 3, 2005 11:05 PM

I'm buying the record immediately! Thanks!

Fuck you Ray...Tapes 'n Tapes kick ass

Posted by: supastar at November 6, 2005 1:19 AM

Fuck you, too Taryn. You have horrible taste

Posted by: supadupastar at November 6, 2005 4:33 PM

this reminds me of all the promise of British Sea Power's Apologies To Insect Life. That was a brilliant track - it had so much power. the remainder of that record could't follow up on it though. structurally and emotionally this song has a lot of the same qualities. really great track. hope the rest of the record can deliver with the same punch.

Posted by: mike at November 9, 2005 10:37 PM

hey, i really liked this song. i hope the rest of the cd is just as good. for some reason, i also fell in love with the color - am i the only one who thinks its fantastic? anyways, thanks for this song, good choice.

I first got into these guys about a year ago or so when my friend's band played Sin-e with em and since then they've only gotten better. Also, I posted about them about a month or so ago on my site (right before the release party for The Loon) and finally got my copy of their new disc in the mail. More about them on my site (and it seems finally on other sites too!) very soon. Viva Tapes 'n Tapes!

Listened to it a few times, definately catchy...sounds like it could of been on the tarentino connection or something.... which i guess is a compliment but can't say it did much for me. Liked the review though... you should check out bellX1 and damien rice b sides (the professor et la fille danse)...
