Bring Him Up the Christian Way
Kurt Wagner. I know a lot of people like other lambchop albums, like "nixon" and "how I quit smoking." And this is all fine. I have no problem with that at all. For whatever reason, my favorite is "Is A woman." The exceedingly quiet album just sounds like romance and summer and love to me. I can't explain it. But the first time I heard it I couldn't really hear it--it was too quiet. Which is funny to me. I bought it anyway, and fell deeply in love it. The summer of 2003 smells like nothing except Kurt Wagners waitsian rasp and the beautiful orchestration of a Nashville session.
This is why "Prepared" is one of the best things I've heard all year.
It's 3 a.m. on Saturday... or is it Sunday. I just got home from a night I sorely needed with friends and friends and friends, and this post is clearly something I regret. But honestly, I trust you readers enough to not make fun, ok? Anyway, the next time you stay out too late, and you're just plain fucking smitten, put this song on. Let the guitar line ride its way into your dreams, let the lyrics and melody dance their way into your hearts and just forget that you're cynical ironists for just five minutes. There's no reason not too. It's ok to just let it slip away for one night. I promise we'll all be ok. And besides, I'm making eggs and bagels and sausage tomorrow. What's not to like?
Anyway.. this is from a collaboration album with Hands Off Cuba called "CoLAB." You can buy it for a tiny price from merge records. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for putting up with me. I appreciate it sincerely.
