Thank you all for nothing at all
There's been a lot of positive press about the new Wilco live album Kicking Television: Live In Chicago. The sort of reasoning in these reviews has to do with how A Ghost Is Born lacked the intimacy of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and how the live versions of its songs give them much-needed energy and warmth. These songs, actually, sound a little redundant.
What sound better on Kicking Television are their earlier songs, especially the ones from Being There and Summer Teeth that sound great with a live band.
Though it annoyed me on first listen, I love the broken record ending.
I saw Jeff Tweedy play solo a few weeks ago, and it was great. What was obvious from the show was how much he loved the songs, and how good the songs are. The best thing about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the songs themselves, with the amazing production acting as really effective window dressing.
Though Wilco sheds the window dressing on Kicking Television, the songs remain, and the audience rightly eats it up.
Of course, you can buy Kicking Television all over the goddamn place, but you can always start with the band's website.
