December (For Robots)

Dear Music For Robots readers,

Well, it's that time again. Not only is it three days before my birthday, it's six days before the birthday of a guy who some think started it all.
By "it," of course, I mean "terrible Christmas music," as well as all that other stuff. Some don't believe this, of course, and some don't really care either way. I was going to make a mix that reflected all of these views, but a sad combination of being busy and being lazy settled in. So I apologize for a lack of, uh, spiritual breadth for this playlist, but I hope it still reflects a winter atmosphere in addition to Christmas. I think Robot Saleem solved it all when pointing out what December is all about, Charlie Brown: days off.
Therefore, we bring you one of a probable series of holiday playlists (it's a zip file, so you can use bittorrent - or download the individual tracks) …

The MFR Multiple Consecutive Cold Weather Days-Off Compilation Special!

4-Day Weekend – Bandway [buy]
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Darlene Love [buy]
Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy – Bing Crosby & David Bowie [buy]
Nightime – Big Star [buy]
Christmastime – Aimee Mann & Michael Penn [buy]
Just Like Christmas – Low [buy]
Christmas Party – The Walkmen
Father Christmas – The Kinks [buy]
I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm – Kay Starr (Stuhr Remix) [buy]
The Christmas Song – The Raveonettes [buy]
Skyway – The Replacements [buy]
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Death Cab For Cutie [buy]
Joy to the World – Clem Snide
Silent Night – Low [buy]

Hopefully this has got something fun in there for everybody, including two versions of the best Christmas song ever recorded. It starts with Robot Saleem's choice, which immediately brings us to the heart of the matter. (Are you not paying attention? Days off!) I threw in a couple tracks that just seem wintery to me; hopefully they fit in even though there's no mention of Christmas.
But enough explanation.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Jolly Kwanzaa, Awesome Solstice, Super Chrismukkah.
Thanks for reading, see you in 2006.

Robot David

P.S. Act fast, this motherfucker's getting deleted on Wednesday.

Dude! Thanks for putting this together. Every December usually I seek out a new xmas record with some new songs for my collection--but this season's just been too hectic. So it was a pleasure to find this well-curated set. A few of 'em, I think I've got, but the bulk are new to me. Cheers.

Oh yeah, and props on the Big Star and Replacements inclusions. Good thinking; I wish more "storebought" holiday comps did that sort of thing. Gives us a respite from the usual xmas sentiments, which can get a bit thick & syrupy sometimes.
