yellowcab clusterfuck: metal on metal

here in NYC we have a transit strike. it's complete chaos. cars are literally backed up past my house in Bed-Sty, Brooklyn waiting to get onto the Manhattan or Brooklyn bridges. it's cold. Blair probably had to freeze his little arse off on the Williamsburg bridge this morning. people are grumpy. at the heart of all of this? the MTA. let's all give them a nice thank you for pissing away a billion dollar surplus on completely unnecessary holiday fare discounts instead of paying their operators a fair wage. it's stupid: the people driving the trains are the only people in the MTA actually doing their jobs, unless you count inefficiency and embezzlement as hard work...

at any rate, if you live anywhere around here, you're not going to be going anywhere fast anytime soon. walking long distances, waiting for cabs, trying to find a ferry or the LIRR, or just sitting in your car for eons. you're going to need music. a nice chunk of it to keep things upbeat. so here you go:

M. Woody Fu & Adrian Michna a.k.a. Eggfooyoungster - Metal On Metal (limited time download expired!)

Woody Fu is the mind behind the brilliant and somewhat-updated Peroxide Comics, and together with the Eggfooyoungster strung together a mix that is pop mastery as it's guiltiest. you love it. you hate yourself for loving it, maybe, but you'll nod. this is pop music mix n' mash at its best.

so there you go. be patient, charge the iPod fully, and hopefully you'll get to work before it's time to go home again.

TWU unionists apparently get paid an average of between $54k to $62k. That doesn't seem more than fair to you? That's more than what most graduates with college degrees earn.

On top of that they are asking an 8% pay raise per year. That's a 24% compound raise in 3 years. You'll be lucky to get 8% in 3 years in corporate America.

Not to mention that that's more pay than New York City policemen and firefighters get - people who put their lives on the line every day. Are you seriously contending that the transit workers deserve more than the NYPD and FDNY for operating a bloody train or driving a goddamned bus??

And the benefits: retirement at 55 and a close-to-nothing contribution for their healthcare. This is unheard of everywhere else. Get real, if you please. Unions are not always 'in the right'. Unions can be greedy. And this is a case of the local chapter of a union going rogue demanding unreasonable wages by holding a city hostage to its demands. Indeed, TWU international testified at a hearing that the strike was unauthorized, and that Local 100 had been unreasonable in rejecting further arbitration.

When these jerks signed up for their jobs as City workers they accepted the bar and legal prohibitions against going on strike. They accepted the terms of their contract. It's a free country - if they don't like their contract terms they are free to shove it. Why don't they? Because they know they won't get a better deal elsewhere? This is no excuse for breaking the law - and breaking the terms of their contract which they jolly well knew about before they signed up for the job. And the 1 billion surplus? give me a break. Since when did the surplus generated by a public body belong to civil servants? When the same body generates a deficit, should the TWU unionists take a corresponding pay cut as well? Get this: these workers are not PARTNERS in a firm. They are EMPLOYEES. They don't get a cut of the profits. Not to mention that this malarkey on the surplus completely ignores the fact that the MTA liquified several of their property assets and is a ONE TIME BOON ONLY - intending for it to cushion shortfalls in the years to come.

How can the TWU and their supporters be so myopic, and so economically unhinged? Embarrassing really.

I have to say I agree with the advocate of the devil here... The transit workers don't think 45-65K is a "living wage"? they don't want to contribute anything to their health care? they want to retire at age 55?

Give me a break and GET BACK TO WORK!

Posted by: robot blair at December 21, 2005 10:24 AM

i think the strike was a dick move because the people that are hurt by it (the hardworking citizens of new york who just want to get to work) aren't the ones that the union is negotiating with. the union also doesn't get much sympathy from me after they blocked the automation of the L train earlier this year.

on the other hand, i think their demands are actually quite reasonable. i have no problem with them wanting a decent salary, benefits and retirement age. the fact that they make more than the NYPD or NYFD and get better raises than most of corporate america to me means that the NYPD and NYFD ought to be better paid and corporate america ought to demand better raises.

the "they make more money than me, wah, wah, wah!" argument is pretty childish.

More proof that dunderhead internet writers should stick with whatever there extremely small area of expertise is rather than writing about important stuff. Only a total slackjaw would think these striking nitwits aren't being paid a more than fair wage. You deserve your commuting misery.

Yeah, y'all should maybe BUY this after you've finished listening.

Posted by: Adam at December 22, 2005 1:36 PM

STRIKE OVER - now get back to work. oh, and "hold your head high"

Posted by: jc at December 22, 2005 3:15 PM

Hey, I made this CD with Adrian. There is some silence at the beginning of this version because it is a rough mix that wasn't smoothed over yet. The master is louder and has a different intro, and I believe several tracks are different. It's selling at turntablelab, or if you're really horny for it just email me: contactwoody@yahoo.com ... Thanks!
