More From Scandanavia

David & The Citizens - Now She Sleeps In A Box In The Good Soil Of Denmark

David & The Citizens, helmed by singer/songwriter David Fridlund, have been releasing CDs in their native Sweden since the early 00s on Adrian Recordings. Their sound is a sunny, spastic, orchestrated, multi-layered flavor of indie pop music, not too far removed from Neutral Milk Hotel, with a similar hint of darkness and melancholy in amongst the sweet melodies and harmonic vocals.

They have been showered with critical acclaim in Sweden and Europe for years now, including a Swedish Grammy nomination in 2004, and heavy rotation of their "Song Against Life" video on MTV Up North. I can imagine this being wildly popular music in Scandanavia, becuase it is so deeply interesting and multi-layered - I feel like all of the indie pop we've been hearing here in the US that is from the far north has this in common. I personally think its pretty fantastic.

The band is getting their first official US exposure with a self-titled compilation EP, released by Brooklyn's Friendly Fire Recordings (home to Asobi Seksu and Faunts), that features tracks from their first couple of albums and a few b-sides. Friendly Fire will also be releasing David & The Citizens' full length album Until The Sadness Is Gone, later on in 2006.

I love the way that a lot of these Scandanavian bands have a better command of English than a lot of American bands.

I've been enjoying Until the Sadness is Gone and For all Happy Endings for a couple of years now and can attest that D&tC are one of the more consistently satisfying bands. It's fantastic that they're finally getting some attention on this side of the pond. Thanks Music (For Robots). This is exactly what music blogs are intended.
