Sunny, Warm (aka not NYC)

Belong - I Never Lose. Never Really.

Hump day it is, and it really feels like it today. I haven't been sleeping very well lately, since my better half is out of town. As a result, my brain is feeling a little fuzzed out... Which actually makes this song feel all the more perfect right now!

Belong are Turk Dietrich and Mike Jones (no, not that Mike Jones) - they are from the beleaguered city of New Orleans, and they make crazy, fuzzy feeling music that veers, in this case, towards speaker-overload, and at other times towards truly ambient sound. This song also exhibits their delicate approach to melody - long on repetition, but with subtle changes throughout - that also appears across the other seven tracks on their debut album, October Language. The album also sees additional production, guitar and mastering work done by Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv - with whom Dietrich has collaborated under the name Benelli (they remixed Nine Inch Nails’ “The Frail (version)”, found on the the Things Falling Apart EP).

The album is being released by Carpark - a stalwart label in the indie/electronic scene with Montag, kid606, Kit Clayton and Greg Davis (among others) filling their ranks. October Language comes out on February 8th, and will be available from Carpark's online store (US) (International), downloadable from iTunes, or from your favorite indie music retailer.

Also, Belong is on tour with Ariel Pink this winter, and they're appearing at SXSW in Austin, so you can see what they do live (check the Carpark Live page for their full tour schedule).

I can't say exactly why, but this track is amazing. if the rest of the album lives up to this, it's going to be an incredible record. if only there were more tracks available somewhere...

Wow. Belong is just as good (if not better) than Endless Summer by Fennesz, with more accessability about it, somehow. I'm awestruck, seriously. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Good stuff. Props go out to Carpark/Paw Tracks/Acute for being such a rad trifecta of labels.

Really amazing!!! My friend is a freelance journalist, and he has a copy of the record for review. I must admit that the rest of the record is perfect. The album alternates between lush wall of sound stuff and more tranquil quiet moments in the vein of william basinski. Definitely will be in the Top albums of 2006.
