I felt a whole lot better after that

The LIfe Pursuit

Belle and Sebastian - We Are the Sleepyheads.

Lately it's taken me a while to get used to a new Belle and Sebastian record. In some cases, (mostly the Storytellers soundtrack) I never quite came around, but more the most part they've won me over. A lot of this has had to do with getting used to the idea that they can just be a fun band. I've had to completely break down the image of them I'd built with Tigermilk and Sinister and get used to a more outspoken, and outwardly confident band. What helped the most has been the live shows. For some reason I had assumed that a Belle and Sebastian concert would be a quiet, reserved affair but it ain't. Stuart dances.

So now we come to the upcoming album. And again it takes some getting used to but it's a worthwhile journey. They have found the groove. It was there in the Bookends release on Your Cover's Blown and the Cover version. And it's back. We are the Sleepyheads is my initial favorite track (after only a few listens). I can't wait to see it live. I'm hoping it will have the whole crowd bouncing.

Wha?!? That's the new sound of Belle & Seb?! I never thought I'd use this phrase to describe one of their songs, but what a funky workout!

Great tune, thx for sharing! Is the whole album this good?

Sleepyheads is one of the most likeable tracks from the new album and its also my fav. The hook for me is the shooba-dooba-dooba's. Can't get enough.
My heart will probably explode when I see them play this live in March.

I would say the whole album is this lively. Song for Sunshine sounds like a Family Stone track. There is a lot of funk. Like I said, they found a groove.

I'm a massive B&S fan, and though I was really underwhelmed at first, the songs are so insanely catchy that the production just fades away and you're left with a fantastic, fun-as-hell album. I love it.

I know exactly what you mean, Dave. When I saw B&S on the Storytelling tour I was totally suruprised by the energy level of their show and Stuart's dancing. This, after all was the band that used to play concerts in libraries, right. When Dear Catastrophe Waitress came out I probably would have been thrown by the more forward sound, but the live show really prepared me. Anyway, I'm always glad when bands change; we don't need six versions of Sinister.

Is it odd that I'm putting it on my workout mix for the gym? Sweating to some B&S?
