To The Slow Start

Mittens on StringsMittens on Strings - Last Shot.

Don't get worried when the song appears to stop about 2 minutes in. This is just a deception, or for the band to gather their thoughts and start again. I adore this song. I really like the Thom Yorke-like vocals over the loping banjo and quiet drones. It's a wonderful little piece of laze to fil out your Friday afternoon. The tiny, rolling hi hat in the background, and the plink of the mandolin all bring it together, as cymbals delicately crash. It's a beautiful song, and a hell of a way to end a record.

Mittens on String are from Kentuckiana, which I'm told is that space between Kentucky and Indiana. My midwest geography is sorely lacking, and for that I apologize. I really need to get out more, or at least study some more maps. At any rate, the band collectively writes and sings their songs, and has recently released a self-produced record. It's called "It Is Becomes Disaffect Toward the Present World, Look Up the Sky!!" which is a real mouthful, huh? Too bad I'm not getting paid by the word. It's a really neat record, with varying styles of music on board, each with its own story to tell.

They just got back from a little tour, and will be heading out again in March for a stop at SXSW. I'll do my best to catch them there, and I think you should too. You can learn more about the band here, and you can also stream their whole record at the same place -- I recommend the track "G.I. Dirt Races." You can pick up a copy on CD from them for super cheap. Recommended.
