Just Who Made What?
Whomadewho - Out The Door (Superdiscount Rmx)
Talk about ridiculous remixing, here is an almost-eight-minute epic rework of a really great modern dance rock. Whomadewho craft a genuine brand of electronic jamrock that is post punk energy, wiry, fat basslines, topped off with a sweet croon by vocalist Thomas Hoffding.
Yet Whomadewho know full well the possible power a remix can have - see their own rework of the Munk & James Murphy track "Kick Out The Chairs" (available on the newest installment of Gomma Records best-of mix albums, Gommagang Drei, which is totally sick) and you understand just how well they know this fact. Pure Genius that one is. Now onto this track! Another genius remixer is this character, Superdiscount, AKA Etienne De Crécy. Etienne's been working in electronic music for years now, first as Motorbass (with Philippe Zdar, half of Cassius), and his 2000 album, Tempovision was a massive staple of my mixtapes at the time.
Well, now, here Etienne is working the hell out of Whomadewho, all crazy synths and fuzzy bass - basically a perfect remix, as it keeps just the right amount of elements from the original song, while completely changing the song into something new at the same time. The remix appears on the newest Gomma Records 12", which also features a non-album Whomadewho track that is total genius itself, as well as a stretched out 12" edit of the song - well worth picking up!
For more of Etienne de Crécy, you should check out his Myspace page - there are a few songs I've never heard before, but that I must get my hands on (I'd be willing to bet that his track, "Fck" from his Commercial EP, will be blowing up dancefloors in the next few months). If you aren't familiar with Whomadewho, do yourself a favor and check out their website again, and you can stream their whole album. Pick up any of the records mentioned above from your local indie dance retailer, or visit out friends at Forced Exposure (US) for more Gomma goodness.
