Thursday (shoulda been a snow-day) Banger
Just another cold, snowy day in March in the ol' NYC... As much as I would have preferred to stay in my warm apartment, drinking coffee and going through my stack of promos, I am at work today. I'm taking a little break just now, since I stayed late last night, rebuilding a server whose MySQL/PHP link I'd managed to chop up into little pieces.
Anywho, here's a bit of chopped up beat-freakery, courtesy of Forss, that comes off of the dope new KYO (a Kitty-Yo sublabel) compilation, Futurism Ain't Shit To Me 2. The record is long, with seventeen tracks of breaks, skewed modern hip-hop and other goodness, featuring a bunch of artists we've had here on MFR, including Soul Junk, Quasimoto, Slum Village, Daedelus, Jackson, Stacs of Stamina, General Electrics, as well as tracks by Sole, Prince Po, Bus, Pedestrian, and Otto Von Schirach among others.
Forss, AKA Eric Wahlforss, has been releasing records for a number of years now, and "Soulhack" is the title track from his most recent album, released by Berlin's Sonar Kollektiv label - you can purchase it direct from the label, here - Forss is a big fan of deep layering of samples, distortion and breaking down sounds to little pieces... which is probably why this song is on the Futurism compilation: its all about experimentation and the combining of elements of electronic music, and hip-hop, into something new. I dig it.
You can order Futurism direct from Kitty-Yo, from our friends at Forced Exposure, or from your local indie retailer. Also be sure to check out Forss' website for more info on him and on his live dates (of which there are a bunch coming up this month).
