I can't sleep but I don't care

Jel - Nice Last

I always keep an eye on Anticon releases, and while I enjoy them all, the greater public listening audience seems to run very hot and very cold on them. While most of this centers around Doseone (who people hail as either the bane of their existence or the best thing in progressive whatever-hop), the attention he draws tends to detract from the roster of amazing artists they also support. We've posted about the tragedy surrounding beatmaster Dax, as well as Why?'s amazing Elephant Eyelash, and waaaay back, Themselves.

Themselves is/was the aforementioned Doseone, and this fella, Jel. Their music was jagged, abstract, and not light stuff, probably owing to Doseone's creative style/contribution. On his own, however, Jel has created an album that is beautiful, melodic, haunting, and rings true with all the best elements of trip/instrumental-hop. The first listen blew me away, and brought back memories of DJ Shadow's Entroducing's inauguaral listen all those years ago...

You can explore parts of Jel's catalog at eMusic (get 50 free tracks while you're there), listen to or get his albums via iTunes, or CDs via Amazon. Recommended; perfect for these slushy spring days and flu/hangover recovery sundays.
