SXSW doesn't suck

SXSW 2006 is right around the corner. Mark and I are going to be there. Say hi to us.

Like last year, they've released a gigantic torrent file with full mp3 samples from almost every band playing the festival (actually two torrents this year). That's a combined 942 mp3s of music.

Downloading and listening to all that to find the really good stuff is a pretty serious chore. However, I've undertaken this herculean task. For the last week or so, I pretty much haven't listened to anything else, and I've noted all my favorites for you. That's not to say that the rest of them aren't worth checking out, but these are the ones that I think shouldn't be missed. Grab the whole torrent if you have time (or just want to fill up your hard drive with new music).

I've only made it through the first torrent. I'll post a followup with my favorites from the second, smaller torrent in a few days.

I've managed to narrow it down to 79 bands, which is still a lot, I know, but that's a full order of magnitude less than listening to the entire torrent:

Anders, what would we do without you? This is awesome!

I'm glad Atmosphere made the cut. Holla Minneapolis!

Nice blog.

I'll be making previews and profiles of some bands, if anyone wants some help wading through all these performers (www.m-dee.blogspot.com). Austin is a great little city and SXSW always just looks like it sucks, but usually doesn't. I mean, how many times can you see Tony Conrad and Morrissey in the same weekend?

Keep up the good work.

How long did it take to post this lineup?

Posted by: carlos at March 6, 2006 6:13 PM

carlos, it only took about an hour to write up the post. 5 minutes of which was writing a small python program to convert a simple list of bands to an html list of links.

coming up with the list though, took many many hours of listening.

A noble deed, I wouldn't have gotten around to all of them for a long time. You have my appreciation.

Make sure you check out Duane Andrews. His playing style is a mix of django reinhardt and the portuguese/irish sounds of Newfoundland. One of the best small shows I've seen in Toronto last year. Plus he's from my hometown, Carbonear, NL.

I made a page linking to all of the mp3's for those without torrent access or those who have download managers:
