Kay You Dee You
Wow. Sometimes something comes across my lil' music desk and it just totally surprises me. Kudu is one of those somethings - I've been hearing buzz on them for a while now, but this is the first time I've really given them a listen. Their press release talks about the broad appeal the band has, hitting points from "disco not-disco", goth, post-punk, jazz, funk and pop, with specific references to Deee-Lite and ESG. They do all this and more.
On first listen, I felt a connection to the music, with the album's strong beats and synth programming, courtesy of Deantoni Parks, and the part-croon part-scream vocals of Sylvia Gordon. It made me want to dance in my seat. No, scratch that, it made me want to get up and dance on my desk! I guess that's the idea, as the word on the street here in the city is that Kudu are a real force to be reckoned with when on stage. Their parties at Nublu in the East Village are known to be explosive and retarded fun.
Their new album, Death Of The Party is being released by Nublu Records - the recording and distribution arm of the Nublu venue - and it is total genius. DOTP is pop music from another galaxy, and I wholeheartedly recommend you buy it when it comes out next Tuesday (March 14th) - you can buy it direct from the label's webstore, here, or from iTunes. Do it. It is well worth the twelve bucks. Hit this page for another free track from DOTP, "Playing House" (another solid jam).
The band has a hot gig lined up for Saturday night, playing a set at 'Rip It Up and Start Again' - a party to celebrate the US release of Simon Reynolds' book on the punk to post-punk era, with DJs Dan Selzer (Acute Records), Mike Simonetti (Troubleman Unlimited) and Roy Dank (Pop Your Funk), with Kudu on at 1am. Nublu is at 62 Avenue C between 4th & 5th - $10, Doors: 8:30pm
