"Is it off-key, or is it just too hip?"

make it nasty

Spankrock - Rick Rubin (XXXchange Electro Remix)

It is finally Friday, and after a week without much sleep on my end, I am real glad for it. To let you kick off your weekend in nasty, electronic style, here's a remix off of the first single from Spankrock's new album, YoYoYoYoYo, put out by NinjaTune's hip-hop label, Big Dada.

The record is so good and totally all over the map, with Spankrock's dirty Baltimore gutter raps, layered over, under, around and through XXXchange's ingenious production style. The record comes out April 18th (day before my birthday), and will be worth your every penny - honestly, it is a great album, and totally not what I was expecting from these guys, since my only knowledge of them was the Turntable Lab-label release, which is a great record - production is tight - but nowhere near as good as almost every track on YoYoYoYoYo. I did happen to see them perform at SoHo Lounge down in Miami when I was there a couple weeks back, and it was tons of fun - if you get a chance to see them when they roll through your town on this tour (they're all over the map, literally, in April and May), make it to the show!

So this track is from the B-side of the "Rick Rubin" 12" - worth looking into for you vinyl heads for the instrumental, non-album track AND another remix that features Pase Rock from Five Deez - and there's another new single out for the song "Sweet Talk" which is also really amazing, that, according to a friend of mine, has a breakdown in the last third of the song "that rivals Len ["Steal My Sunshine" I assume] for pure-pop mastery". Hit the Spankrock site for these, or your favorite vinyl-proprietor.

You can, and should, pre-order YoYoYoYoYo from Amazon (US), Boomkat (UK), or order it direct from the Ninja Store - I can say with a fair amount of certainty that if you're into dancing like a maniac, have enjoyed anything associated with Hollertronix, older-school B'more breaks, or ghettotech, or even electro, or Slick Rick - there's so many points these guys hit on here - you won't be disappointed with this boundary-pushing record.

Get yer freak on!

yo! your birthday's the 19th. So's mine. I'm celebrating at the Spank Rock show in Atlanta. I'll drink shots for both of us.

PS: Did you go to the Adult Swim/Stones Throw party in Austin.

Nice Post. YoYoYoYoYo is a great album. I'm hitting them up in Toronto on Saturday April 15th. In case anyone wants to do shots, I'll be the guy in the Chuck Norris t-shirt.
