Straight From the Crate to the Station

Dudley Perkins Dudley Perkins - Funky Dudley.

We here at robots have been fans of Dudley Perkins since back in his Declaime days, before he sought out the mothership connection. I've been just about crazy about the guy. I mean, ever since he dropped that "Flowers" 7" in 2002, I've been behind him. Dude is just a nut, and I love it. He can't really sing, but he's so weedeeded like the rest of the rest of the Stones Throw crew that he comes off as unintentionally soulful. He has a conversation with God at the end of this record, and God speaks back to him. It's pretty out there.

So, while his earlier releases were down with the soul jams -- and some of his other songs have come out of some psychadelia, this latest opus revolves almost singularly around George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic canon. And this is fine with me. The switch from the dusty fatback of soul to the slick rubber band caverns of the 70s pfunk era is a welcome one. But don't get the wrong idea -- this isn't gfunk era Dre production -- it's still very much Stones Throw. Some of this shit is smooth though. Anyone familiar with the disco funk of Booty People and the like will be down with this for sure.

This track here really is just the prelude to the madness that follows. It's really just telling the story of what the record is all about, which is ripping some sick funk loops and just getting down to it. This record is called Expressions (2012 a.u.). I personally have no idea what "a.u." is (any thoughts?), but I know that this is definitely some future shit. This record is solid from start to finish and I want everyone to be converted to the church of Dudley. Each song brings something new to the table both production-wise and in terms of storytelling. I'm totally in love with it.

So, you'll have to wait until next Tuesday (The 18th) before you can grab this, but it's worth the wait. You'll thank me. So highly recommended.

Funky Dudley, indeed. This is one of my favorite tracks of the year, another great release from Stones Throw.

and one a.u. = the average distance from the earth to the sun - i think 2012 a.u. is about where this track is being transmitted from - funky fun! :P
