She's tearing apart my world

Ah, springtime, finally! It miraculously got up to 84 degrees here in Minneapolis yesterday, and while I could have used a little more of a gradual move towards summer, I won't complain. (Besides, it will probably snow next week.) One of the best things about spring, in addition to people emerging from their winter cocoons, is the music you get to indulge in, those songs that sound like people emerging from their cocoons.

This is how it felt listening to the Heavy Blinkers' record The Night And I Are Still So Young. Now, genuflection before Brian Wilson can be a boring prospect. We've got Pet Sounds; do you really need to try and re-create it? This record, however, succeeds more than it fails. And what it sometimes lacks in originality, it makes up for in elaborate arrangements that never sound overstuffed. Also, the Heavy Blinkers hail from Nova Scotia, so they know a thing or two about the importance of spring.
This track is probably my favorite:

The Heavy Blinkers - Try Telling That To My Baby.

Try getting that out of your head today. Also, picture it as the theme song to your personal '80s sitcom. Maybe you work in a wacky workplace? Like an adult bookstore or something? And your co-stars are Sinbad and Bronson Pinchot? I'm just sayin', because that's exactly how this song sounds.
Uh, but it's good, too.

It doesn't come out until May 23, but in the meantime, you can pre-order The Night And I Are Still So Young from good ol' Amazon.

Well said, Dave! I like hearing piano any time of the year.

That would be one hell of a sitcom.

even better then the proposed sitcom is the animated video for this song - complete with a wayward cupcake and chorus line of tamales:
