This is the Sound
Hockey NIght - Rebel Fever (Who We Are).
The good boys in Hockey Night were kind enough to send us this demo they've been working on. From the opening dueling guitar solos you know that it's without a doubt Hockey Night. But it's definitely new, and the sound is clearly growing. It's less Pavement this time around, which is a good thing. It's more good ol' fashioned American rock, and I'm buying. The song's got a great bounce, the bass pops, the snares snap, and the dueling guitars are just what the doctor ordered. How can you not like this? They've tapped into a great melody with a fun shuffle behind it. It's all sunshine and springtime.
As for what the band is up to these days... well, first off they're not on Lookout anymore. They're actually on a new label run by three guys in the england (one of which is Ross Millard from the Futureheads) called Longest Mile Records. They'll be releasing a Hockey Night single in the fall. I guess the boys in the band have been doing some soul searching, and so far are more than happy to give their singles away for free, since, in the worlds of band member Paul Spangers "cause it seems like you fucking can't [make any money]! especially if you don't make music that sounds like joy division or gang of four..."
However, they are working on a new album, and if it's anything like this demo we can expect good things. I really think they're up to something, and I'm definitely excited to see what they come up with. In the meantime, you can catch them on tour:
