Friday is for dancing
You guys know I love it when something really hits me from left-field, and Pink Skull is one of those things. The band is "former punk-rocker turned raver" Julian-Alexander Grefe, Ian Kelly and Justin Geller (and their myspace page claims "some help from 'the occasionals'... Michael McHenry & Steve Stoner"). Grefe toured and recorded with an emo band called Transmegetti and art-rock outfit S. PRCSS, then got into producing bands, and found himself matching these talents with his love of DJing and electronic music, the end product of which is the Pink Skull project.
Their obvious influences include the magical italo disco of Georgio Moroder, and the psychedelic ravey-ness of the Orb, but they also stake a claim to Psychic TV, Can (one of their songs is actually called "If You Know Can, Then I Guess You Really Know Music" the cheeky bastards), and Faust - I definitely hear traces of Krautrock and electronic-psychedelia, as well as Matthew Herbert, and, perhaps more prominently, one of his labelmates, Brooks. They say their music is "for those who love drugs and disco" and "fans of Zongamin, Soccio, and Kitsune" - basically right up my alley, musically speaking. It is freaky stuff, but as soon as I put it on, I knew I was going to like it - "In Touch" is the first track on their album, titled Blast Your Akk, and the other tracks don't disappoint either.
The album is released by ToneArm Records, the music division of Philadelphia's artist collective Space 1026 - Blast Your Akk is available to buy direct from the label for a mere eight bucks - support indie music and check it out! You can also hear more of their songs on their website!
PS: Some goings on around (my) town this weekend include:
"The Last Aktion party" at Lit tonight - Massimo (EVR) and Damian (The Explosion), Jordan Z (Chicago) and JDH & Dave P - Lit is at 93 2nd Ave, the party starts at 11pm and is free!
Saturday, friends of MFR, Puppetbox, is playing at Trash Bar in Williamsburg (256 Grand St.)
Sunday, MFR vol. 1 alumni El Ten Eleven is doing a matinee show at Pianos (158 Ludlow at Stanton) - they're on around 5:30 or so, and seeing them live is truly a thing to behold. Do not miss this.
Have a kick-ass weekend!
