Indie beats vs flossin' raps
DJ ediT - Hefty Flossed Out Mix
Every now and then, when the opportunity rolls along, I like to post mixes that aren't mine, when they're rocking like this one is, courtesey of LA's DJ ediT, who totally reworks chunks of the Hefty Records catalog of chopped up beats, mashing them up with flossed out rap tracks and club favorites... sounds like: Mike Jones vs. Savath & Savalas, Missy Eliot vs. John Hughes, E-40 vs. Eliot Lipp, T-Pain vs. Telefon Tel Aviv, Busta Rhymes vs. Some Water and Sun.
Robot Mark said it reminded him of the Ratatat mashup mix - which if you heard, you'll probably agree, and if you haven't heard it, seek it out. I think this mix is pretty hot - I often find myself thinking that a lot of poppy rap songs would be a lot better with more interesting production behind it, and this basically hits that particular nail on the head.
If you're into the beats you're hearing here, definitely check out Hefty's two recent compilations: History Is Bunk a two-part set of new and previously-unreleased tracks, and the Hefty 10 Digest, a double-CD collection best-of from their decade-long catalog and a mix-CD put together by Prefuse73. They're available direct from the label's website, or from your favorite music retailers.
Solid gold steez.
