Coachwhips - Hands On...

Coachwhips are dead. Long live Coachwhips.

Just in case the Flossin' wasn't your style, here's another tidbit for you today: Coachwhips were one of John Dwyer's bands - he of San Fran death metal band Dig That Body Up It's Alive and rock duo Pink and Brown fame (and OCS, now known as "the Ohsees," who have a new record out next month) - and they made furious, scorching garage punk songs. Instead of fading away, they burned out the Coachwhips name after a few records, and as such, many people, myself included, never got to experience the fun and fury of a live 'whips show.

Well, look no further than Double Death, released next week on Narnak Records. The album is a CD and DVD set, with 25 tracks worth of rarities, b-sides and cover songs on the CD, and over 45 minutes of previously unseen footage on the DVD of the band going from tiny San-Fran house parties to massive, redonkulous concerts, all of which show just how rabid their fans were. Watching the DVD, it made me feel super jealous of those kids that are thrashing around and falling over, because I never got to do so myself (and one of their last shows was in fk'ing Brooklyn, a couple of train-stops from my apartment!).

The CD is great as well, with songs up and down their (somewhat small) musical spectrum - mostly punk-garage with a slightly twangy bent to it, featuring wild, skronky keys by Mary Ann McNamara, the broken-drum-kit smashes of John Harlow (and/or Val (tronic) on keys and Matt Hartman on drums in the 2nd iteration of the band), and Dwyer's blasted-out-of-a-tiny-box guitar riffs and broken-payphone vox all making a racket together. It is absolutely the kind of music your parents would probably hate if you played it for them - in fact, I know plenty of people my own age who'd absolutely hate it too, but I have a soft spot for this really raw sounding stuff. The cover songs on the album, which are listed separately as "Roachclips w/Ian Knox," are pretty amazing for their selection of the bands they cover: The Traps, Gories, Ickys, Horrors, Kinks(!), and Adam Ant(?!?) Totally freaking nuts.

You can pre-order Double Death right here, and get it into your sweaty little hands for a measley twelve-bucks, and you get a free poster! Come on! I know you're curious, so just do it!

I had no idea they'd broken up. Very depressing, especially since I never got to see them live.
