Locked in a Room
Bored with the current state of rock and dance, Chicago's Walter Meego have opted for a hybrid of the two. They aren't quite america's answer to Hot Chip, but they're damn close. I love the dirty, sketchy feeling this song emits. It just oozes this funky sleeze -- the kind of slime that Hot Chip traffics in. It's got bounce to it to, and once the beat really kicks in for the last third and the synth burps come squiggling in the song really takes shape.
This comes from the band's latest 12" single on Brilliante records - a label we'll be hearing more from soon. The A-side is "Hollywood," and that shit is awesome. Great single, and it always gets a solid response when I play it out. I like rock bands that issue 12"s - it's just a nice touch. Also, these guys aren't exactly a rock band. Their earlier singles seemed to have a little more of that element too them, but now they seem to really be coming into their own with their own sound. Their live shows have become full-on dance parties.
If you're in the midwest, you're in luck, cuz these dudes are playing all the damn time. They play tonight at the Darkroom in Chicago, tomorrow at the Eighth Street Tap Room in Lawrence, KS, and then Saturday at the Ol Tapas Bar in Lawrence with the always fucking amazing Flosstradamus who really deserve a post of their own. A few of these shows are actually "Super Meego," which is a combination of live instrumentation and DJ'ing. So be on the lookout.
You can pick up the 12" from the Brilliante store. Highly recommended.
