We've Moved On

The baby and the satelliteMicah P. Hinson - The Leading Guy.

I've been following Micah since his first record a year or two ago. I had absolutely no idea how young he was. He struck me as this like Richard Buckner type -- some old bearded loner wearing flannel and beating himself up. Well, it turns out he was like 19 when he cut that last record. He's 23 now, which isn't that much older. And keep in mind this age thing strictly has to do with his voice, which is hard to imagine coming out of a young guy like that.

At any rate, I like his new EP - the Baby and the Satellite - quite a bit. It's a little darker than his last one, but a little more in focus. He's definitely grown as a songwriter and in the studio, so I'm definitely excited to hear his new full length that's dropping in October. It's always nice to have guys like Micah around -- dudes who you know are good for some great cold weather songs. I mean, these acoustic songwriter dudes are a dime dozen and always have been. I think really it comes down to personal taste as to why you'd like an Iron & Wine over a Will Oldham or a Phospherscent, ya know? And sure, some folks will like all of them. I think Micah is working his way into that group for sure, with a lot of pop sensibility and a unique voice. I'm rooting for him.

You can pick up the new EP over at iTunes. I recommend it.

Anyway, sorry that this has been a slow week. Blair's on vacation and I've just been super busy. I went to the opera last night, and man, I gotta say it was terrible. I saw this terrible thing, and by all means, stay away. I'm by no means an opera expert, but I know crap when I smell it, and this shit stunk.

Your opera comment caught my eye, since that's another of my interests. Having just glanced at the LA Opera's schedule, I'd say you might've done better to wait and see Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Remember "Alabama Song," by the Doors? ("Oh show me the way / To the next whiskey bar...") Originally it's from this opera. Kind of a political satire with fantasy elements.

thanks for the tip, John. I know nothing about opera, so that helps. I'd like to see more, since the experience was a fun one - it was just the show that stunk.

The Doors didn't write that song. It's from play, the "Three Penny Opera" that was written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.
