Rekid - Retro Active

Rekid, aka Radio Slave (who's remixes you will see dotted across many a pop musician's discography), aka Quiet Village Project, is yet another production guise of Matt Edwards, and his new full-length Made In Menorca, is finally available, thanks to UK super-label Soul Jazz - best known for collections of funk, soul and reggae, but, once again, pulling an unexpected turn by releasing what is for the most part a house-music record. Genius.

So the Rekid record (ha!) is a really moving piece of music - 14 tracks total, with weirdly twisted dance music like this track (best comparison to another artist? see Chicken Lips more recent work), so called "cosmic disco" a la Lindstrøm, and even slower-tempo tracks that approach hip-hop pacing. Essentially it is an artist-album of dance music built from a unique sound palate, with enough variation and melody across its length to keep your attention. I listened to it twice through right away, and have been drawn back to certain tracks, like this one, which I believe is a variation on an earlier song. So, if you enjoy the stuff I mention above as reference points, you will be into the album as well.

Buy your own copy of Made In Menorca from Forced Exposure (US), or Boomkat or the Soul Jazz store if you're in the UK.
