It's you that I dream of

The Woes

You know how something often starts with a great introduction, and you're all excited, and you get this feeling of, "Oh man, this is gonna be so good!" and then it's a huge letdown? But enough about Superman Returns (hey-o!).

No, I'm actually talking about the opposite of New York-based The Woes. The below track has one of those introductions; it crackles with energy, and then comes Osei Essed's fantastic vocal. Then all hell breaks loose, and then there's that great breakdown, and some nice horns...
Well, listen for yourself.

The Woes - Quiet Faith.

I love this track. I love how this is bluegrass, country, New Orleans blues ... it's a lot of things, but somehow it's also on its own. This track is also from some unidentifiable time period, too. I don't know how they do it.

The Woes have a million influences listed on their MySpace page, and they all fit their music: John Fahey, PJ Harvey, Bob Dylan, John Frusciante.
I'm tired as hell today, so please excuse my inability to properly explain the awesomeness that is the Woes. Instead, listen for yourself (repeatedly, as I've done this morning), and pick up their new record, That Coke Oven March, from the band's website (click on "shop").
