Solenoid - Drack Soul

Here's a little Techno to finish off your week, courtesy of Portland, Oregon's Solenoid. Solenoid one of the production guises of David Chandler - he's also known as Mr. Pharmacist, DJ Brokenwindow and is in the group Office Products. Where these other aliases veer towards freeform experimentalism, Chandler's work as Solenoid tends towards the poppier side of the electronic spectrum, taking in old school Detroit techno, electro, italo disco, all with pretty melodies, bubbly acid 303 lines, and pop song structures.

"Drack Soul" is the first track on his newest album, Supernature, his fourth full length as Solenoid. The record shines with danceable material like this track, as well as more mellow, head-nodding IDM style tracks. The record is released by Seattle's Orac Records, a label dedicated to experimental dance music, and home to Dapayk and [a]pendics.shuffle (who I featured here). Mr. Chandler is also closely tied to Portland's Holocene crew (whose DJ Copy and E*rock we've also featured on the site), and he also co-runs the Community Library label with Strategy.

You can purchase Supernature from our friends at Forced Exposure, or via Kompakt records mailorder (or Kompakt-MP3 Net), as they are the distributor for Orac. Recommended.

PS: Don't forget, I'll be rocking the boat Saturday night at Frying Pan with my buddy David Bruno, Super Meego and Glorious Ninth live - expect all kinds of party jams, techno foolery and true disco-madness!

Portland electronic music is blowing up! Strategy, Solenoid, and Copy did a showcase in my town a month or two ago, and all are ridiculous. The Holocene Remix comp that just dropped is a must!

I wasn't sure how I felt about this track at first, but right about 2 1/2 minutes into it the hairs on the back of my neck stood up with excitement. Good good good!! Thanks, kids.

In the liner notes, Chandler thanks Darwin and a couple of other notable scientists... Supernature indeed!
