Stephen Beaupré - El Gato

Just a quick post today as I'm juggling a dozen things at the moment...

Stephen Beaupré lives in Montreal, and he makes crazy tech-house music using self-made samples, much in the vein of Akufen and MFR favorite Matthew Herbert. Beaupré uses layers and layers of sound to create a hypnotic, swirling mass of sound that takes multiple listens to begin to digest (and I think I listened to his new album easily five times all the way through do decide what to post here), but that always seems to retain one necessary staple of this kind of music: it is still danceable.

His new record, titled Foe Destroyer, is a masterful work - ten tracks of minimal techno and tech-house that squirms its way deep into your head, with addictive melodies and wicked beats, all full of a mountain of sound. This record is his first solo full-length. However, he has been working as one half of the production duo known as Crackhaus, with his partner Scott Monteith (aka Deadbeat), for a number of years and has been an active part of the Montreal electronic scene for a decade.

Foe Destroyer comes out next month on Montreal's Mutek, the still-young record label associated with the annual Mutek electronic music festival (check his page from this year's festival here). The album will be available via our friends at Forced Exposure and other fine purveyors of electronic music soon. Enjoy!

PS: Don't forget to swing by the Creature tonight - I'll be on deck around eleven!

hi Blair - interesting music, thanks for making it available. for me what makes this track work is the rhythm - all the sampling is fun and very, very well done, but it has a 1980s I've-just-bought-a-sampler feel to it. the rhythm really works for me! I am having trouble with the drop, it's nice to listen to as it goes all wiggly but if I was dancing I think it might put me off.

best wishes

A.
