The Black Neon - Hollywood 1, 2 & 3

So, last week I dropped that Go! Team cover on you, and today I've got yet another Memphis Industries artist for you, the (mostly) one-man-band The Black Neon. You may remember I posted about him (Steve Webster is the main component of The Black Neon) way back, with his cheeze-electro cover version of "You're So Vain" but it seems he has really moved on from there, and has ended up making a great electronic and psychedelic-pop record, Arts & Crafts.

The record, which comes out on Memphis in a couple of weeks, is a really great slice of kraut-rock-inspired electronic pop, full of sunny southern California harmonies, fuzzy guitars, synthesizer bleeps and bloops - it makes for a great listen, and one which I found to be full of surprises. I really didn't know what to expect when I put the CD on the first time, but kept finding myself smiling and humming along to the melodies. Webster wrote all of the songs on Arts & Crafts, and performed much of what you hear, with the production assistance (as well as a lot of instrument-playing) of Greg Saunders, all of which was recorded in Berlin. I decided to go with one of the instrumental songs on the record, though I highly recommend you check out some of the vocal tracks to get a better grasp of what The Black Neon is all about (you can hear a couple more on his Myspace page).

RIYL: Eno, Air, Beck, Kraftwerk, T. Rex, Super Furry Animals.

The album comes out on September 12th, and will be available in all good record shops, including the Memphis Industries online storefront - you can also download it from iTunes. Also, check out the cool video for "TX81Z" on YouTube.

PS: I'll be rocking the decks at Good World tomorrow night (Friday, Aug. 25th), so come by and have an elderberry-flavored drink with me!

Then on Saturday night, I'll be DJ-ing at Southpaw in Brooklyn for this great triple-billed show: The Subjects, The End Of The World, and Snowden - I'm gonna be on between bands, and again after they're all done to keep the party going. Come rock out!
