Scissor Sisters: 7:30-8:30
Good lord I love these kids. All musicians are not created equal on many fronts, and while we typically weigh artists and bands by their musical talents, one also has to strongly consider the showmanship of an act in the totalling out the whole shebang. In addition to being fabulous musicians (and in one case, an unreal falsetto singer), the Scissor Sisters are true entertainment professionals. The banter, the dancing, the stage jumps, the kicks, and their efforts to put out a huge amount of positive energy in not only their music but their stage presence all adds up to one of the best shows I've seen, every time I've seen them. This show was no exception, with them mixing the best tracks from their self-titled debut with some amazing picks from their upcoming release (comes out Tuesday folks! get in line now!), my favorite of which was Lights, which was the best performed song I'd heard all day. They even gave shout outs to Charm City, John Waters, and spoke nothing but incredibly kind words of all the other bands on the bill. The bow they took to close out their set, the fact that they happily cry "we are YOUR Scissor Sisters ladies and gentlethings, THANK YOU!" just drives the point home: entertainment professionals. Sisters, y'all are an amazing group, so thank YOU. Pictured here is BabyDaddy rocking out on the intro of Take Your Mamma Out.
For the remaining acts that I didn't have the energy to get close enough for pictures of, the Chili Peppers were okay (Bawlmer loved 'em), and the Flaming Lips were as much of a spectacle as ever (Santa-costumed backup singers and bouncing glowy balls!). I waited to hear them play Yoshimi, and then escaped the grounds. Between Gnarls and the Sisters I watched a bit of the Killers (creppy facial hair!) and the Who (creepy old guys!), and ate a questionable chicken wrap (creepy flavor!)
Big thanks to all the bands that made my day, big FU to the dude who slapped a DC101 sticker on my back, and big big love to Virgin Mobile for putting the whole thing together and giving Baltimore (and not DC for once) a chance to host a kick-ass festival!
