CSS @ Webster Hall, 9/28

Moblogged by MFR

Oh. My. God. CSS just finished up their set, and while I'm not sure it was as bonkers as last night's show, holy crap kids. Every song was dripping with raw, fresh energy that soooo many NYC shows sorely lack, and Lovefoxxx and company gave us proof in spades that being a rock star is supposed to be fun above all else. I mean, they killed evey song in their setlist, but the whole thing was such a great time that the band and audience alike were shocked when they realized it was time to go. During the performance itself, Lovefoxxx was such a refreshing break from what I'm used to seeing at Webster - she crowd surfed, she sang several songs in the audience, danced with us, told us stories ("I got so drunk last night I broke my teeth, so I had to go to the dentist today and I have fake teeth now!"), and brought everyone within reach of the mic cord into the show. I haven't had this much fun at a NYC rock show in ages. On a personal note, it's so awesome to see how far CSS have come, from years ago when Lovefoxxx was an MFR penpal (we miss hearing from you since you've been on tour!) to their early-demo MFR/MP3 blog debut, to their South American CD release, to present day Sub Pop signee world touring rock stars! These kids deserve every shred of the pile of success and buzz they've amassed, and we couldn't be happier for 'em.

Oh yeah, and something about Ladytron was supposed to happen tonight, but whatever.

At any rate, check back with MFR in the next week or so for a Lovefoxxx/MFR-themed surprise... That's all for now, live from the MFR futurephone!

I enjoyed one of the MFR postings of a CSS song a while back, and I saw CCS recently when they came through New Orleans. The opposite of you, I left the show disappointed and annoyed. What you call "raw, fresh energy" was to me just a lot of jumping around on stage in an attempt to compensate for their lack of talent. The band is made up of five (six?) young women, girls really, who seem like they're having a lot fun on their tour of America. That doesn't mean anyone should go see them play. They sound horrible.

But the only one in the band who seems to have any sort of musical ability is the older guy, maybe in his early thirties who holds it all together. Plays the drums and sampler? Don't remember. I don't know his story, but I bet he was in a lot of cool bands in Sao Paulo over the years and stayed in the music scene and somehow ended up babysitting these brats.

So, Lovefoxxx broke her teeth from partying too hard? I don't find that impressive. It's just stupid. That guy needs to do a better job babysitting.

Sigh. Why are the haters always the ones afraid to leave their names/websites/e-mails? Anyhoo, dear commenter, your eyes didn't lie, you did see five young women jumping around on stage, having a ton of fun touring the states, and why not? Your ears might have been in need of a bit of Q-tipping, or maybe the band had an off night (it can happen) - despite the notoriously awful sound in the Webster venue, every song last night had just as much pep as they did on the LP, if not more. Besides, to me (and everyone else in the venue), the fact that the band was clearly having fun with their tour made it all the more enjoyable - nothing turns me off more than acts that take themselves too seriously, or try to maintain some bullshit too-coolness for the crowd (I'm looking at you, Weezer). CSS has been getting a lot of the sentiment you voiced from the grumpy over-it-already indie grumps that went similarly hateriffic on M.I.A. last year (which was also an undeserved shame). I just don't get it. Let the kids jump around and have fun, folks, because honestly, it's too hard not to call bullshit on the haters when everyone buzzes the hell out of an LP and then acts all haughty and nasty after seeing the band live. Yes, we know you're over it. No, we don't care.

And the teeth thing was clearly a joke. Sheesh.

This is the guy from the last post. What's YOUR name, robot jp? On the internet, do real names matter? I don't post my e-mail address much, because I just don't want to get any malicious spam. You just never know.

Anyway, I don't know if the teeth thing was clearly a joke. When I saw CSS, I think they made reference to getting hurt while being drunk and partying. And the chick in the opening band, Bonde de Role, had bruises all over her almost naked body. It was pretty gross really.

Just because I didn't think CSS was fun, it doesn't mean I'm opposed to bands being fun. I'm just opposed to bands being bad. Sometimes a band can make up for its lack of talent with spirit, energy or vitality (see the Stooges, the NY Dolls, and on and on). In fact, that spirit and energy can BE their talent. I just don't think CSS has it.

I just heard and kind of liked a recorded song of CSS. I never "buzzed the hell" out of them. In fact, I guess my comment counters the buzz. And don't lump me in with an MIA backlash either, thank you very much.

Uh, my real name is jp. I guess it's normally written in uppercase, but at least we've got something to call me, and some sort of affiliation.

We'll have to agree to disagree on CSS having it or not - I was entertained to the point of being delighted, and I'm sorry to hear you were not.

And the teeth thing was a joke. Lovefoxxx told me so face to face, when I was staring at her teeth, which were real after all, after the show. So there.

"I'm not pregnant!"

The show was absolutely amazing, JP, and although I have a love for Ladytron and their "too-cool-for-you" demeanor which you don't quite seem to (Or maybe you were joking... nevertheless), I was utterly blown away by CSS. I agree with you on all points you brought up. I go for music that pushes boundaries and envelopes and is stellar in construction and intent as well as in the fun factor, and although CSS was not Bjork or anyone else at the genius level, they certainly have enough talent for their insane fun factor to really complement them. The jumping around did not come across as some sorry affectation as it does with so many other bands, essentially saying, "Look at how I jump, scream, thrash my head, and pretend to play air-guitar with my guitarist, just like all the other great performers that came before! I must be an artist!"

LOVED the concert. LOVE CSS. I am one happy camper.
