DJ Shadow @ Webster Hall, 10/18

Moblogged by MFR

In the midst of an otherwise hectic week, I had the good fortune to go see one Mr. J. Davis at Webster hall on Wednesday night. He's touring with Lateef (arguably my favorite Quannum MC as far as the swell guy:killer live show ratio goes) in support of his new LP The Outsider, and it's definately worth checking out for the spectacle of it all. The stage was basically a 3 x 3 rear-projection block-grid, split so that he was able to appear to be floating in the middle of the images, present really only as, well, a shadow (pun intended I guess) if you were looking head-on. To complement the live music (Shadow's show is basically a live re-assembly of his songs from their sample components via vinyl, CD, laptop and a million little buttons), there were amazing animations playing around him at all times; not random crap, computer-animated shorts done specifically for each song. And really wonderful at that. You can get a taste of the whole shebang here:

Good times. Thanks Josh! Thanks 'Teef!

I love the woman screaming at about second fifteen, going completely beserk over him pushing synth key. But the background animation for that song adds to the sort of halloween organ melody, which happens to be ingrained in my mind now, thank you very much jp, I'll be humming that during the PSATs tomorrow, thanks loads.

Shadow is a true master - from the video, looks like it was a fine show to watch, as well.

lol! when i saw someone playing with their little electronic doo-dad at the show i joked with my buddy that you were prolly live-blogging the show.
now i see that i was sadly half-correct.
you know that it's really distracting to others, right?

Alright chickenshit, we get the picture. Saying it once was enough, twice without signing your comments is petty. And I sincerely doubt you saw me playing with my doo-dad, since I wrote the draft of this post while rushing to catch the L train outside the venue. So there.

Besides, if you spend all your free time watching people play with their doo-dads, aren't you missing the show you came to see?

Now if you want to bitch about people talking on their cell phones during shows, I'm right there with you.
